what specifically do you dislike about this? ngl i went in half-expecting it to be the worst or second worst Alcest album and found a lot to dislike in the opening pair especially, but the rest seems pretty much up to whatever you'd consider the guy's standard to be

This one just feels sterile in comparison to all of the others to me, especially the first 2/Kodama. Just seems like they went on autopilot for this one. Yeah there are some cool riffs and intricacies but lacks all of the ethereal magic that I'm used to from these guys tbh.

I actually have the opposite view. I feel like the riffs on Spiritual Instinct are better, but this excels in creating that ethreal atmosphere. I will always value riffs over atmosphere so that explains why I prefer SI and Kodama.

Idk man. There is just nothing here that really grabs me. There are points from each Alcest album that blow me completely away. This one has no such magic for me.

hawks are you sure you didn't listen to SI by accident

lol this is just how most Alcest sounds to me compared to the debut - think this one tones that summery blockbuster side of their sound up more than most (and without the same level of dreaminess Shelter used to complement it), but can't say it felt like *that* much of a departure. kinda similar to Voyages as a business-as-usual record ig
going to dip back into Spiritual Instinct soon - i remember being underwhelmed, but literally nothing else about it

You're not wrong Johnny. Its not a huge variation from what they've done in the past. Maybe its because I'm growing more out of this type of sound and it takes a lot more to impress me? The atmosphere here just does not pull me in and the riffs aren't strong enough to make up for it.

Correct Pika rating for once.

Sterile? Exact opposite for me, brings the feels hard. It's like a living, breathing nostalgia trigger in musical form. Gets me all introspecting and junk. Sucks that it does nothing for you but it is what it is.

Nostalgia kicks in for me in the fact that I'd rather jam literally anything else by them lol. I stand by the notion that all of these high ratings would be lessened if this was any other band on the planet.

Any other band wouldn't sound like this tho.

L'Envol, Amethyste and Flamme Jumelle is the best 3 track run of 2024 by some distance for me

Just listened to the opener from their first album and immediately followed it with the opener from this one.
The opener from this one is better.

Amethyst, Flamme Jumelle, and Child of the Moon are the 3 standouts here for me, but the whole thing is amazing
