I have to be honest with something, this phase of Taylor Swift has singlehandedly pulled me into the world of melancholic singer-songwriter vibes across different styles, especially Folklore. I really can't stand her 1989 era; it's just too much of that bubblegum pop for me. But this new stuff I find way more tolerable, and even feel like returning to it from time to time. Sure, the lyrics are pretty out there, but it seems like she’s drawing inspiration from artists like Phoebe Bridgers, just laying out her thoughts in a raw, chaotic way. When I first heard Phoebe, I was kinda unsure about it, but I noticed that not many critics or fans were even acknowledging those lyrical themes, like they where so used to them from Phoebe, they didnt feel the need to bring them up again. But over time, I started to appreciate that style. It feels so personal, like the singer is just having a casual chat with us, sharing her thoughts in a way that’s both a bit dull and super interesting because you get to know her better. With this album, I found myself rethinking how much I enjoy that kind of lyricism mostly due to the immense backlash towards some of the lyrics here from critics. Yeah, some of Taylor's lines are definitely strange and random, but I really dig the personal touch they bring. It feels way less obnoxious than her electropop stuff, and honestly, it seems like the most authentic version of herself she’s ever released.

First off, new copypasta dropped? Second, comparing this album to Phoebe Bridgers does the latter a huge disservice for reasons I shouldn't even have to explain. Third, these lyrics are the furthest thing from authentic. If anything, Midnights was more authentic than this. I won't clown this take as much as I could because I do see where you're coming from, but the issue is that Swift is a pale imitation of artists like Bridgers, who have far more songwriting authenticity, and, frankly, skill compared to the millionth same-y Jack Antonoff track

In my view, judgments about the 'authenticity' of a work tend to reflect the extent to which we have emotionally connected with the work. After all, it's not like we can step into Taylor's mind, see what emotions and experiences she's having, and then check how congruent her music and lyrics are with all that. Instead, we respond to how the music itself affects us. If we resonate with it, we are much more likely to believe that it originated from the sincere expression of another human heart. Psychologically, it's hard to be both moved by some music, and be cynical about how it came about. On the flip side, if we aren't moved by the music, it's much easier to entertain cynicism about the artist, particularly if they make a lot of money.

I think the standard insta reply to her announcements is that you're "shouting, crying and throwing up", which if true is quite the feat.
