hmmm fair point re. Primal - never really viewed it as modulation showcase, but there is a lot going on for sure. will relisten with that in mind
"if that article says anything other than “get high af” it’s objectively misleading"
this is true for anything with you as its target demographic

alife/andalucia plays/kisses are top tier slowdive songs. rest is pretty good but those three raise it to a 4 for me

Skin in the Game is top tier as well

All their past releases have had the same issue, one-dimensional and campy ideas that always felt shallow and boring. That issue still plagues this new album, but maybe with my growing age, this sound is growing on me.

Andalucia Plays is the only song I don't look forward to. Wish it was an instrumental.

Yeah, not getting the praise for Andalucía at all. Probably the weakest track.

4 and a half minutes long!
I think I always remember it's an actual song when it goes on long enough I realise it isn't just a fade out from the previous one - i'd say that's prob my low point, though more just a 'hasn;t registered' neutral thing
rest of the album is fantastiche, 'Chained to a Cloud' is a little underrated maybe

yeah that one's rather good, altho this all blends into one homogenous comforting bloc, it's a nice vibe. Finding it hard to conclusively offer up 'standouts' apart from the opener, but the evenness of the whole thing is its greatest strength
I think that's why I'm not particularly enamoured with 'andalucia' because it's distracting enough to take me out of that moment (and polka dot shirts aren't my thing)

Neil's old man voice on Andalucia really ain't it imo, sounds like Yo La Tengo at their snooziest
Prayer Remembered is gorgeous and a secret highlight, but the sequencing really does present it as filler - works great on its own terms though
i feel Cloud should be better than it is; some good ideas at play there, but i find it mostly bland

yeah, the vox are distracting, I think it's the fact they're not good which may be the problem there

Yeah I really didn't care for that song either because of the vox.

This is a win in my book for Slowdive. The fifth album, the second in their comeback, shows that they still can make slow-paced and spacy-sounding dream pop, without sacrificing what they have always been known for; shoegaze guitars. All their past releases have had the same issue, one-dimensional and campy ideas that always felt shallow and boring. That issue still plagues this new album, but maybe with my growing age, this sound is growing on me. But I still have a hard time sitting through this album without wanting to fall asleep. In spurts however this a soothing and low-key dream pop and post-rock album. Don?t have to think too hard while this is on.
god this is awful

Did Slowdive ask 'more sir?' for a second helping of faint praise in the one comment? I doubt they did...

well, the short version anyway
and yeah, that is a take

The sequencing is a bit lopsided; Both Shanty and Alife I really love, Prayer Remembered good but too early, then the middle is still good but a bit samey for them, then the last two songs are fantastic.

despite being the most accessible and straightforward song here, and not so well inspired, kisses is still the most memorable song for me here, and the only one i'll probably come back to
alife is also very nice
