Phone Home's lyrics are just unforgivable even by core standards
Will agree that OP saw him step into a junzy tuffguy persona that got increasingly grating throughout their career (Dissociation lyrics mix it with mostly awful nods to all the worst Reznor qualities, these ones are an absolute chore), but I can take that one as an acceptable equilibrium

"Apparently they're gonna be playing 7 songs live, which means there are 3 unreleased jams out there šŸ‘€"

they wouldn't dare play etid or tdep songs would they? lmao

greg did some dillinger acapella at his show hahaha

them not having enough released material to fill a set makes me think its a slight possibility.

ā€œWorst Greg lyrics that I’ve actively acknowledged are option paralysis by far.ā€

I think he’s an awesome front guy, but yeah in a sense… probably my fave track off that is ā€œI Wouldn’t If You Didn’tā€, but even then I’ve always had a hard time with the clean-sung bit in the middle. The lyrics here are especially painful when at this point they really needed to not be.

Greg’s never been the most amazing lyricist, but he was definitely better than Dmitri in that regard lol

paha
Dmitri at least was mercifully unintelligible

That’s true. ā€œI SMELL THAT WHOREā€ is a hell of an opening line for one of their most popular songs though Lmao

^ agreed with the above. It’s like, damn guys, just open some books and read and do some practice with your writing. Helps wonders

Granted, 1997 was definitely during the he-man woman hater’s club in metalcore lyricism and times were different then but it definitely makes you cringe listening to it in 2023

Well, i guess if we have many vocalists essentially throwing a tantrum before a microphone, we’re gonna get some doing it out of being terminally incompetent with emotional expression and, thus, smooth-brained views on women and relationships and their respective places in these contexts

Re miss machine they may very well be bad too, I was a lot younger when I was listening to that album and I feel like he also didn’t do as many cleans iirc so there was a combo of having the much high cringe-threshold of being 13/14 or whatever and also not actually understanding much of anything he was saying. But I do feel his vocals and lyrics both peaked with ire works and then dropped off hella

Also glad someone else made the Trent reznor comparison, I’ve always thought that

^ Him and Mike Patton were clearly his biggest influences… especially in the ā€˜Miss Machine’ era.

Oof

Having non cringe lyrics in metalcore is exceedingly rare, but I don’t care as long as I can’t understand them

Exception: Johnny truant. Goat lyrics

Death metal also has some dumb lyrics or a bunch of times where the lyrics are fine in isolation, but when metalized do not fit the style and sound stupid. Like someone growling ā€œmotherfuckerā€ is often gonna be pretty ridiculous

I was gonna say metal in general but I didn’t want to open that can of worms… lol

I can agree with that, though I’m also often tempted to say music in general has pretty crap to serviceable to fine lyrics, but often doesn’t do much to really say anything, just describe shit that is or happened or they want to be in the most basic or vague ways

most metal has stupid lyrics but "someone growling motherfucker" tends to be the province of mass appeal tuff guy slipknot and deathcore shit. or at least i never heard it in immolation, gorguts, ulcerate idk

>though I’m also often tempted to say music in general has pretty crap to serviceable to fine lyrics, but often doesn’t do much to really say anything, just describe shit that is or happened or they want to be in the most basic or vague ways

True but if we are getting into genre specifics sometimes that’s all it really needs to be so like my metric for bad lyrics and bad poetry are substantially different. As long as bad lyrics don’t make me cringe or feel embarrassed to be listening to it in public we’re good and anything beyond that is a bonus haha

For instance dance music in general like you could say pretty much anything on a loop as long as it enhances the vibez

Or in pop universality and excess are kind of the staples and you really don’t need to fuck with that formula much
