Their set at Roadburn was phenomenal. He plays those knotty diminished runs so effortlessly. They also had the theremin player from Inter Arma.

After watching them live I had to update my score to a 4'5.

They killed it live, given the complexity of the music I'd say it's one of the best live shows I've ever witnessed. Their drummer is simply insane. Also they seemed like very funny guys to be around. At the end the drummer played with the hooded tunic wrongly placed so his torso and belly were visible. Once the show was over we were clapping and hailing the band loudly like crazy and the guy gets up and runs to the changing room smiling and screaming with us. Rad and unforgettable show

My fav black metal band currently prob

Man that’s such a cool experience, thanks for sharing. Still haven’t caught these guys. They came through like 2 years ago here and I couldn’t go (I don’t even remember why so clearly it wasn’t that important) and I’ve been chomping at the bit ever since. They play some of the last LP live too?

After witnessing some of the tracks of this album that did not convince me as much as the first two my mind has finally clicked. This album is another masterpiece. Officially best 21st century bm band. Oranssi Pazuzu and Imperial Triumphant completing the podium prob...

I just saw them yesterday... pretty energetic and in your face for the complexity of their material. Cool show for sure!! And nice dudes.. got to speak to the drummer afterwards for a while.

@Frost: That distinction still goes to Deathspell Omega, amazing quality and vision over so many albums (ok, minus the last one...)

Well yeah, of course, I just think Deathspell Omega are more 20th century than 21st, thematically and even musically. But we are talking about my fav band of all time so, of course I would agree haha.

I don't know, even if deathspell Omea technically are 20th century as they started to play then, they are the quintessential 21st century band for me, at least since Si Monvmentvm, which actually for me is where they really became themselves. They were ahead of their time so for me I clearly book them under 21st century (maybe 22nd :p )

Deathspell Omega are in a league of their own tbh. Their compositions are influenced by 20th century classical music (Penderecki, Ligeti...) and their chaotic dissonant riffing was indeed ahead of their time. Then there is the technical prowess displayed by absolutely superb musicians. Luc Lemay named Hasjarl as the most underrated guitarist nowadays and I 100% agree. Their drummer was even thought to be a machine for many years. On top of that the lyrics are really awesome for us philosophy, theology nerds.
