Monotonic background noise metal. Hetfield has as much left of his vocal range as Kirk and Lars have their old playing abilities. At least he is managing to sound okay here but lacks variety and inspiration just like every other component. Most riffs actually work but none is memorable. Can't recall any song here after listening. The length really hurt every song here and snoozed out the whole record.

Hot take: St Anger is definitely better than this. It’s still a mid record but it gets way too much hate

This is....fine. James can still write some kickass riffs, they just can't string together into a consistent kickass album. Some songs are just too damn long. And I'm still not a fan of their post Death Magnetic-sound/mixing.

^ and that sums up my opinion about that album

The biggest problem I have with the record is that the songs are way too basic and uneventful for their extensive lengths. Say what you want about Death Magnetic and Hardwired, but at least they use their songs' runtimes to take the listener through several twists and turns. This? Not so much

Hetfield's vocals may be "good" as a lot of people are saying ig but he still sings the worst sing-alongy buttmetal lines in history and the music around isn't helping much

The album turned out somewhat as I expected, with some good moments, particularly when they revisit Kill 'Em All and Justice, but no standout songs. I can't stand Hammett's solos anymore.

Is that a Seek & Destroy throwback at the start of Too Far Gone?

I'd take about 4 songs from St Anger over anything from here except maybe Inamorata

The lows on St Anger are way lower though

Pretty much what you'd expect from a new Metallica album. A collection of hit and miss singles that are ultra polished and ultra safe.

Fire Lars and Kirk, hire an editor. Album would instantly be so much better.
