To be fair I was the same when Blur released Chemical World. Life changing without doubt and I think I had some sort of confused man crush on Damon Albarn.

How someone could defend this while downplaying the stylishness and inimitability of early Gorillaz is so far beyond me. You’d have to have never been hugged in your life to not have been inspired by how cool Gorillaz used to be.

Fair, it’s a generational thing I guess. Experiencing something as a kid changes it a lot.

I think it was Bobby at least

'by how cool Gorillaz used to be.'

when i was about 9 demon days came out. it was very very popular in the uk, much more so than abroad as far as im aware. it was everywhere. it was my introduction to a lot of different styles and rappers. i havent listened to those songs in a long time but theyre all seared into my brain

they were both incredibly cool and popular. very important album

There were a couple instances weren’t there? I think Richard called him a certain homophobic slur and also received the old banhammer.

'Demon Days was a chart success reaching the top 10 in 22 countries. The album reached number one on the UK Albums Chart and number 6 on the US Billboard 200,[1][2][3] and was later certified six times platinum in the UK and double platinum in the US'

I do see zaks old wanker perspective. He grew up through the best of the uk music scene. He wasn’t hearing dub and trip hop influences for the first time when he heard Gorillaz. Gorillaz was not only the introduction to that for most people my age, but also to a lot of quintessential hip hop.

Gorillaz cool?

I’m not having it. I used to absolutely idolise Blur around 1994 as a 14yr old. Fucking infatuated but they were most definitely not ‘cool’ maybe that distorted everything else that followed.

As a 9yr old would I have thought Gorillaz were ‘cool’? I dunno.

I was around 7 when I first saw Sex Pistols stuff and unbelievably I ‘got it’ even then. The danger, the shaking up of what was normal and despite arguably being a ‘cartoon’ they were unquestionably real. I found them ‘cool’

The other hilarious instance of this is reflecting on the guest list for linkin parks reanimation and realizing I was listening to people like motion man, kutmasta Kurt, and black thought when I was in elementary school and had no idea

Anyways yeah if you haven’t liked anything from the last three then you will hate this guaranteed

Trust me zak, they were really fucking cool for my gen. Consider the rest of the musical landscape of popular music of that time. It was MTV era.

As a concept, Gorillaz was very innovative. It could have fallen flat on its arse, as a complete flash-in-the-pan gimmick, but in those early days they came loaded with quality tunes backing up Jamie Hewlett's awesome visuals.

The fact that they seem to have been treading water for so long (I've only heard some singles on radio... left me cold), but yet no-one bats an eyelid to this whole endeavour kinda exemplifies how successful it was, when it could so easily have been an embarrassment from the get-go.

Always an ironic ‘pop’ product carried along by the song craft.

I will not apologise by saying Skinny Ape is one of their best ever tunes.

Skinny ape would admittedly be my fav song here if it wasn’t for the “oggy oggy oggy” section
