yeah wiz, but what's wrong about it? they are not going tor reinvent the wheel 30 years into their career. God forbid they change an inch, they are perfect as they are. If the next album is like this one I'll 4 it again.

Nothing wrong with that. In fact I'm also a sucker for the type of bands that don't need to reinvent the wheel....Katatonia just doesn't cut it for me. Maybe it's the lack of heavier parts from previous albums.

struggled to get into this after the first listen and I love almost all of their records old and new. Gonna keep spinning it though and hope it grows.

Random round of thoughts after a full jam:

Colossal Shade is like half butt-goth and half NITND-like, and I mean that it's fire.

The first half of Drab Moon is so good, between the jagged/unpredictable drumming, spiraly synth and doomy guitar. I feel it then loses itself a little in the grandeur, but all in all definitely a banger.

Opaline was a dangerous (aka possibly suicidal) flirt with literal pop but it turned out super catchy. Just wish it had a meaty solo instead of the tease we got.

Author's chorus is gold and they threw in a flashy solo to boot. Banger.

Impermanence leaves me a little conflicted because it's got that kind of huge-but-lifeless chorus that I'm not a fan of but the long solo section is very appreciated. Plus it adds a bit of variety in general, like the dirgy intro.

Sclera has this nice chorus where every layer does something. Production does its best to ruin it but it'll likely be a grower.

No Beacon is great, love the crunchy riffage in the middle and the long soloing at the end. More Kataprognia is always great.

The simple bangers like Birds and Atrium aren't my forte but they're energic enough, nice to have more lively Katatonia. I do find something to enjoy in both, like Birds indeed has that catchiness a la Paradise Lost (think Sweetness).

All in all I can see this grow quite a bit. Don't really get the complaints of comfort zone unless you stopped listening 1 minute into Austerity tbh (which scared me too)

Good points Sab. I feel Austerity is a pretty strong opener though. Starts right away with the prog, no intro, and slides into a solid chorus.

Not to mention the video is absolute perfection.

it's a latter day Katatonia album. you know what to expect. listenable, no emotion, no heart, no soul. everything since Last Fair Deal Gone Down is just so tepid. shame, because they were one of the best of all time up to that point.

also the best Katatonia record is Brave Murder Day and it is not close, it stands head and shoulders over everything else outside of arguably Dance of the December Souls.

ngl Brave Murder Day is the only Katatonia record I'm even vaguely drawn to checking in the hope that it'll be above a 3

Brave Murder Day is phenomenal if you dig that gothic rock sound of stuff like Rapture, October Tide, Slumber, etc. with metal vocals.

Rapture did it better though

"listenable, no emotion, no heart, no soul."

huge cringe comment, its fine to dislike something and voice your displeasure with it but don't talk about the artists who put the art you consume together like this, extremely disrespectful.

I feel like City Burials was a safer album, this feels like they are going towards something different but I'm not quite sure what that is. It still hasn't really clicked with me, and it's somewhere between a 3 and a 3.5 at the moment.

gothic rock doesn't work so well on me if it's not a little punky and a little sexy, so goth metal seems like the least effective medium for it imho

i think this band is pretty creative within a genre I don't really care about, 3.0s forever
