Pretty sure that butt rock person is just trolling or needs to clean out their ears. There is clear southern influence on here and Greyhaven's sound is way too chaotic to be digestible to the mainstream metal / rock fan.

"Maylene and the Sons of Disaster is southern metalcore"

So is etid, and this band obviously goes all in on the etid worship.

I like how I was a little concerned that they’d be going a more mainstream route with this album, but nope, they leaned into a mathcore sound lol. Definitely didn’t see that coming

That said, it’s hard to definitively categorize these guys

Nah there is absolutely a butt rock influence to their sound

and to be quite honest i almost feel like i listened to the wrong album with all the etid talk itt. literally don't hear that at all. nothing about this nor empty black sounds all that "southern" to me

From my point of view the guitar and vocals absolutely have southern influences. I’m a guitarist myself and Empty Black absolutely has a ton of southern influenced riffs and chord progressions. Listen to the chorus on Mortality Rate, I think that’s a good example of it for the guitar and vocals

But at the end of the day I guess it just depends on what someone considers “southern”. Within the context of metal I think they are, but that’s just me

And how exactly is butt rock being defined here? I could give rat's about classification in the instance of this band, southern or not, metalcore or post-hard, whatever -- however butt rock is being used as perjorative.

I think it has something to do with the choruses. That’s the only part of Foreign anchor that wouldn’t be considered mathcore, for me. So idk what else it’d be. I feel that way about a few songs on this album

I’ll leave it at that though. People can classify music however they choose. I only asked about the buttrock one cuz it really caught me off guard lol

Idk at least with the ETID comparisons i find ETID far more rooted in regular hardcore than these guys, who I find much more tech-y and dillinger-esque instrumentally. I also think the vocalist sounds verrryyy Puciato inspired especially with his cleans. Lastly these guys definitely have an alt metal/butt rock gear to them like dillinger did.

And I def don't mean the butt rock thing as insult as I really like this album. And I think it's part of their appeal. Huge butt rock-esque choruses surrounded crazy harsh vox and insane math sections... nobody else does it quite like them.

If these guys dropped the choruses and just fully went chaotic they’d be so solid

Yeah personally I think this album has way more in common with Dillinger’s one of us is the killer album, more than ETID

I get what you’re saying though

I don't know what butt rock is about, but if its being used as perjorative I disagree lol

The more I listen to this the more I think calling this ETID worship is more of a perjorative than saying it has butt rock elements.

like just in the first couple tracks... ETID wouldn't be able to pull off All Candy... just like ETID isn't pulling off the crazy fret board tapping sections on the following track. and the clean section and reverb drenched guitar leads in more and more hands? no way. this band's sound is far more expansive than ETID's ever was imo, pulling off shit here ETID never even attempted on nine different albums.

ETID is one of my favorite bands but i think the constant comparisons to them are an huge oversimplification of what greyhaven sounds like
