idk to me Totally Fine (and other tracks that feel like reflections of their previous hits) sound closer to a victory lap or celebration of everything they've achieved, rather than lazy reiteration of better songs. its staple pup and so damn self aware it doesn't feel like a cheap imitation, more of a knowing "yeah you're damn right we're releasing this exact same song again - what of it?"
That being said, I'm kinda playing devils advocate. This is worse than their last 2 records, for sure, I just think it's a slow grower and deserves more credit than its being given.

It's a grower for sure.
BTW PUP did a Reddit AMA 4 days ago if you haven't read it: https://www.reddit.com/r/indieheads/comments/tw6i8y/pup_the_band_ama/

i should say this record is "fine" but it is WELL below their own standard. given what theyve said about wanting to be more poppy and accessible i dont mind the songs rlly i just hate this production so so so so sos os o so so so so so so much

It works for some songs (Robot, Matilda, Bankruptcy) and totally ruins others (Relentless, Habits, Grim Reaping)

I thought so too re Relentless, Habits and Grim Reaping. Then I listen to the record half a million times and have the opposite view - they're so washed-out and messy and it works i will hecking die on this hill goddammit !

heres the thing i just think if the guitars weren't fighting the synths and everything was given its own clear space in the mix then the naturally messy qualities of PUP could shine

Embrace the guitar/synth fight brother

but like, the combo can and should sound good. the best song on here might actually be relentless-- unraveling is the most lyrically savvy but the song is just sooooo by the numbers

Relentless is slowly becoming my favorite here, agreed

Relentless is one of my least favorites but I also haven't spent as much time with it as the first 4 tracks which I can't seem to stop playing on repeat

I hope the band revisit this from a production standpoint someday. Waiting and Habits particularly fall off a sound quality cliff.
It's funny because in "Four Chords" they talk about "Tuning the vocals". It seems to me the band pushing for a rawer sound was a mistake and that they should have listened to the "board of directors".

They apparently recorded some of this with shitty mics outside the studio so even a new mix might not be able to fix everything but yeah at least a bit better would be nice
|

That's too bad. Thanks for the info Squirrel. I hope they try for cleaner production next record then.
