I just realized how many comments this has 🤣🤣🤣

"clearly not being aware blah bah outside xyz two shitposts time"
did u just imply that it's impossible to shitpost from outside
bc this is big dumb. shitting in nature does feel unsatisfying, but so i imagine does strawmanning faceless swathes of a band's audience in a review for an album no-one else has heard
gonna eat a fuckin lush doughnut now

good luck navigating yourself through those hordes of Discourse-riddled peasants who may or may not have at some point dismissed bcnr without truly hearing them they need you more than you need them

I am too neurotic about the accuracy of my ratings to join into the knee-jerk chorus of either 5- or 1-bombing albums as a weak-willed means to self-appoint my wokeness, but were I so blithe, this’d be getting the five-r.
(It does, however, have a few glaring faults.)

Everyone has their own system for rating, which is quite interesting. I don't have a consistent method for my own ratings but I would probably find myself using 5 and 1 sparingly.
There are so few albums I've heard that I would consider so horrible and devoid of redeeming qualities as to give it a 1. The last Maroon 5 album was a unique exception because it was, well, fairly low effort on their part.
A band like this, though? They have good qualities.
|
| |
almost anything has *some* good qualities, if you really want to go there
even something as insipid as maroon 5 is presumably well produced and polished

Of course, yeah. I suppose it's what the bar for entry is for an individual person. Like, is the bar set at "this exists".
With Maroon 5, it's fair to reason that they make music that accommodates parties pretty well, there are people who resonate with the music. So those things would be considered for someone else. Still, it is rare for me to find a combination of elements I generally listen for all failing to interest me. I'll generally find at least some positive takeaway.

so is this better than Maroon 5 or not?

I don't know haha. Judging by the singles, I like it more but I haven't this album in full. I'm not sure where people are listening to it. Is there a pre-release stream or has it leaked?

No idea, I work at a record store so have heard it a few times since it came in and it's kinda incredible. Fully on board with the review.
Really did not jel massively with For the First Time but this one felt like the missing pieces of the jigsaw to truly get why everyone leved the band so much

That's how I felt with the singles, too. Their first album didn't connect with me entirely but there were a number of elements in there that I did enjoy. The singles for this album feel like they've sort of leaned more towards my style while preserving some of the elements from their debut that I liked.

Staff get promo copies and ting, no idea about the plebeian masses though...
maybe it's being transmitted directly via soundwaves that travel vast distances, mostly uninhibited? I've heard the only obstacle is the dense industrial smog covering areas inhabited by the working classes.
