they decided to write a Crimson tribute album about giant lizards with killer artwork, not sure about the free jazz improv bits, but overall it's a solid attempt

i WANT to like this album…but it’s just falls flat.
Highly disappointed in Alex Bents drumming. It’s very stale on this record. I’ve followed his career since Battlecross and this is some of his most “tame” material. Fall Into Your Hands is the only song he shined for more than just a 5 second solo. I strongly believe Trivium are not fully utilizing Alex. He could seriously change up Trivium’s sound but he’s been degraded into a “supporting role” for Matt’s vocals or for the guitars. I hope this changes in the future, because Alex has massive potential.
Lots of focus on Heafy’s vocals this album, especially during choruses. Not a problem…but his voice seems to be the focus of the mix and the song structures. When cheap, catchy vocals take center stage over amazing musicianship, THATS when you lose me. I really hope Trivium doesn’t become Matt’s personal ego project(much like his streams), but it seems to be going that direction.
What is up with the song titles and lyrics? They’re REALLY diving hard into the “tough gamer bro” aesthetic. I suspect Matt’s(*sigh*) Twitch experience to be the influence for that. “The Phalanx”…..could there be a more obvious Destiny reference? I guess they have a new target audience.
I’m sure I’ll like this album after I get over the goofy stuff(wtf is that album cover????).

Yeah this is definitely a jam. Their best since Shogun. That average is quite impressive but I'm guessing it'll drop to a 3.8 eventually.

I hope not, TSATS being the highest rated Trivium album would just be wrong...

I fail to see the "though gamer bro" aesthetic in this. And I guess you just aren't a fan of decent album art?

That guy must have an extremely high bar for drum performance. The drums here are excellent throughout

If you watch the video is a promo for TESO new expansion pretty much. That doesn't make the album "tough gamer bro" I fail to see that.
I don't agree about the drums either tbh, I think Alex already changed Trivium for the better in the last 3 albums, alot of people see it that way.
Edit: I personally think the cover is pretty decent.

Considering how shite their run from In Waves to SITS was, you probably right

The song titles were like this on Shogun as well. It's classic Trivium actually.
Cover is nice

Exactly, those were real dark times for Trivium.

This is great if you love this sort of style. Just very superficial and typical for me so far but incredibly well performed.

As if the word Phalanx originates from Destiny and isn't used anywhere else ever.

The Phalanx was written before Destiny even existed lmfao

When I hear Phalanx I think of the unit from the original Age of Empires PC game.

"For better or worse I’ve always considered myself a bit of a Trivium fanboy."
@Gnocchi After stating this I'm a bit surprised you've rated the bulk of their catalog somewhere between 3.0 and 3.5. And by bulk, I mean nothing other than this record higher than that.

Fuck these choruses. Onyx has good points, I agree with a fair amount of them. Also they dont know of they want to be a catchy radio rock band or an intense metalcore band, identity crisis.
