I really like this album a lot. Strangers to Ourselves was I think a bit inappropriately maligned, but I can see the patchwork arguments and how some of the songs felt a little dry or flat. This album is much busier and more colorful which makes it more interesting for sure. I'm still trying to grasp everything going on here because of the busied songwriting and instrumentation going on. It's straightforward at points but also needs some growing time in others. I'm definitely pleased overall though.

I agree with everything you said. This isn't perfect, but it's a breath of fresh air.

back to the middle is not only the best song here, but it also has the added bonus of nothing playing after it...

^ true, they really gave that song every chance in the world.
Also, I said back to the middle was the only worthwhile song on this for dramatic effect, but We’re Lucky is also pretty alright.
That's it though, everything else is shit.

fwiw this isn't the album they recorded concurrently with Strangers, despite what literally everyone assumed cos of the title lol. Isaac said in AltPress they're still working on that album, and the Poison the Well singles were all from that. but the stuff on this is all newly written

Yeah, the one that was supposed to be "released as quickly as it's legally allowed to be."
But if the record store day singles were from that album, I'm not expecting it to be better than this.

tbh an album with poison the well on it would be pretty much automatically better than this (if not by much)
|

An album with the all 3 singles from Poison the Well through Ice Cream Party would be lucky to claw above a 1.5, Black Keys ass jank
This is bland as hell, not sure where the step back into more interesting directions takes are coming from

I guess, but I was more talking about the other two songs they released around that time. Those were pretty dire. Maybe in different ways than this, but still dire.
@porcupinetheater yeah, this is as "refreshing" (or whatever people are calling it) as a swig of toilet water.
What'd be really refreshing is if they jumped ship from Epic and started making good music again.

I like PtW fine but yeah the other two are shite. still kinda just morbidly curious to hear it, if only because all their b-side comps have been fire

Wooden Soldiers is kind of nice. The faster ones on here are not even catchy though.. they're just grating. Songs like Walking and Running, Japanese Trees, Never Fuck a Spider on a Fly (what even is that title), ugh.

Ice Cream Party is easily the best of those 3 singles. Wonder what's taking so long with that album if it really was recorded at the same time as Strangers.
This has a few duds but the rest isn't bad or anything, pretty clearly their weakest effort so far tho.

I jammed the album around 4 times last weekend. Giving the Mouse a breather for the week but I plan on jamming them all 4th of July weekend. I'll have favorites by then - super looking forward to it.

I’m with the consensus that Lucky and Middle are the only songs I enjoy all the way through.

Can’t be arsed with this drivel.
