Still so weird that this band is one of the most streamed artists in the world

According to Spotify they’re about #200 by monthly listeners. Which is huge but definitely still a ways from the top

Yeah but I mean with that many listeners and a song with over 2 billion plays they’re for all intents and purposes a mainstream artist which just feels wrong since I don’t feel they have anywhere the name recognition and devoted fanbase of similarly performing artists nor are they exactly critical darlings. Like did they have a TikTok song or something (probably the 2 bil plays tune if so)?

I agree, that is very very strange - had no idea
They do seem to tap into a sort of hipster mellow folk in an even more mainstream way than Bon Iver even, so i sort of logically can get it
Good album anyway

Yeah certainly Lord H mines a somewhat friendlier (day I say more MOR?) version of that widescreen indie folk/Americana sound a la Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver s/t, My Morning Jacket etc. The irony is that the proxy for that stuff that was actually mainstream at the time was that horrible Mumford/Lumineers etc. stomp & holler thing. Lord Huron were around then too but are doing much better these days than those ones are!
Admittedly I do find the Spotify monthly listeners count a bit of an awkward way to gauge overall popularity since that can skew high for artists getting prominent playlist placement. Then again I guess that’s the modern equivalent of radio play.
