c o n t e n t i o n: not gonna dispute its experimentalism, but a relatively small proportion of this felt quote-unquote weird to me. (probably) all these tracks are very clear in their direction plus mood; I don't think there was a single point outside of like four notes on Piel that threw me here and it's (probably) to the album's credit that this mix of ideas and atmospheres and timespアns feels as easy a ride as it does
also the doomy post-industrial doomsynth bits as per Ashes climax are (probably) the least appealing imo. all about the fragile intricate shit

"this is the best thing this site has introduced me to in a long time. great great stuff"
Awesome to hear. I feel the same way about it. Haven't been this excited about a new-to-sput artist since I unearthed Low Roar back in 2015. This is a big time album, both in impact and length.
"2 tracks in.
This is so fucking weird man."
Haha, I agree. Ashes is especially strange so I can see why you felt that way about the whole experience while listening to it.
"not gonna dispute its experimentalism, but a relatively small proportion of this felt quote-unquote weird to me"
Honest point of debate here: do weirdness and experimentalism go hand-in-hand? If an artist is trying something uncommon or creatively expansive, does that make it weird by definition (e.g. not "the norm") or is weirdness a state of mind/tone?
"Sowing I don’t believe you. You 5 literally everything lol"
They're all masterpieces dammit. But yeah, this one is definitely more than just my usual "hit me in the feels" 5, it's got something extra. If you like weird/experimental (see Jotw's response to the above for the correct usage of either word) electronic/indie music, then you should check this.

Which one is this then? ;-)
jotw says experimental mostly, seldom weird
honestly not even sure which I'd tag it as personally...Ashes is DEFINITELY weird in the best way possible and it's not the only moment in which I feel that way.
|
| |
this is both ish

Well clarified I must say. ;-)
Honestly though you're right. It's a little of both and delineating which it's more of comes down to perception.
|
| |
Agreed with both/either/mix, but I'd say it's the former and that, say, saying this has an eerie atmosphere sums it up so much more coherently that overstating its weirdness is maybe unrepresentative to how cohesive and (relatively ig) accessible it is?
So maybe it's that "weirdness" has ambivalent/prickly connotations whereas "experimental" is a white paper?
This is dumb wordpedantboi chat tbh and I'm sorry for propagating this (!!), but does that vaguely figure?
