I read a whole bunch of reviews for this and they all neglected to mention it's like half a folk album

Oh, come on man, when has a folk album ever been this overproduced?

>overproduced

loved the production on black mile - this is the same producer right? The one that contemplates the respective resistance of cheese (literally) in her signal chains? I'm on board, man, she's awesome. Similar vibes or nah?

This is wildly wildly overproduced and it's my biggest complaint but the production isn't BAD, just relentless
It's also weird that they made the truly regrettable decision to use electronic drums on some tracks because the regular percussion sounds fantastic on this

it's still Tim playing the electronic drums lol its not like they replaced him with a drum machine

I really like how they used his drums as triggers for other sounds on this. super cool

@Milo imagine if you like surgically split Black Mile into a full half of heavier electronic shit and a half of lovely almost acoustic songs, that's basically this

I just cannot stand electronic drums, it's purely a personal preference thing lol

really like this album overall. flows super well and the thematic connection compensates for how it feels like three different EPs stylistically

but idk my standards for this band are just super high and this just meanders a bit too much. I'm questioning who thought it was a good idea to lead the album off with the lyric "you're inaudible, thrown away like an audible" which is some Rivers Cuomo shit lol

overall probably around equal to Simple Math or slightly below it. neither are a patch on Virgin or Black Mile

Yeah, I'm only one listen in and I'm going to have to listen at least a few more times before having any kind of real mind about this record. To Sowing's credit, though, there's a lot here that is genuinely welcome, surprising and commendable. There's a ton of merit and quality to this record.

But, it all just sounds so damn cluttered. There's always a half-dozen or more things going on at all times, and I can't really identify the purpose for half of it, except to make this record seem more cinematic, progressive and ambitious than it actually is.

The electronic drums are a good example. I don't have the aversion to them that Slex does, but what do they add to this record that traditional percussion wouldn't? Where's the need for them? I can't really say. It just seems they're there to make the record more busy.
