Taylor 100% started from the bottom, you don't have to like the album but don't lie

"I think the "music is fashion" perspective would apply to most Taylor fans too though."

Nah, it's never "cool" to like something that popular. That doesn't mean you can't be part of a clique in school that all likes Taylor, but they aren't cool because of that. They may be popular, but that's a different thing. Vast majority of Taylor fans will fall into the "casual" category. We probably need a different category to describe the super-fans, which I think is more a "cult-of-personality" type thing. They love Taylor like an idol, and the music is supplementary to that.

Since when is it cool to not like popular things? I guess it might depend on your definition, but liking things that are relatively obscure or outside of the mainstream is seen as weird by most people, not cool.

As for "where" Taylor started, she did come from a well-to-do family that afforded her every opportunity including moving to Nashville to be closer to the country music scene. Other than that support she wasn't gifted anything else. She busted her ass to get a record deal, and once she got her shot her first single was a hit and made the success of her label (Big Machine). She didn't get the full industry behind her until her fourth album, Red, in 2012; by then she'd already sold over 20 million albums, won multiple Grammys, and wrote her entire third album solo.

Other than literally not starting from the bottom, she started from the bottom.

"Since when is it cool to not like popular things?"

Since always. What's popular is only for the sheep and plebs. Us cool kids are special, we like the things that nobody knows about because they're special like us and signal our specialness to others.

She's still starting from the bottom, judging from the way she shit out these two lifeless turds

Well what's starting from the bottom? The literal bottom would be starting as an orphan with no home, family, or money; and even assuming you have home, family, and money it's not like you can buy success if nobody likes your music.

I know you're being facetious but it really is crazy how judgemental some people are of anyone who does or likes anything even remotely different. I worked with a bunch of college girls before Covid and literally all 5 of them said they wouldn't date a guy who doesn't have an iPhone lol

I guess there's an interesting dichotomy between the geeks/nerds/losers and cool kids in that both tend to like "different things" than whatever's mainstream, but the former are looked down upon for that while the latter are looked up to. Maybe it's the difference between someone being seen as having no style and someone being seen as a trend-setter or whatever. Probably the ultimate example of the latter is the whole hipster movement.

I stand by that: you can buy opportunity but not success. I have enough money that I could well-afford to make a studio album if I wanted and hire some decent producers/musicians to help me out, but I guarantee you nobody would want to listen to it.

Idk, when I was in high school the cool kids definitely didn't like different things. They were pretty much all into the same exact shit (skating, weed, sports) and had the same personalities. And now my sister is getting to be that age and it's the same exact thing except TikTok is popular now lol. Anyone who does anything different is "weird." There are exceptions to that though, cause some things are just universally seen as cool. Like if you're a boxer or something, that's unusual but everyone finds it kinda cool
