I can definitely see someone giving this a 1. If you aren’t too keen on the style, it’s definitely overdone to the point of nausea. Besides, this is getting way too high of acclaim, imo. I wouldn’t 1 this, but I could see that pestering someone to loathe it if they already don’t like the overdone piano ballads.
I think this cracking anyone’s top 5 or 10 of the year is a bit ridiculous. Albums should have more variety than this has, imo. One could swap up the track list here for every song that’s not Venice Bitch or The Greatest and it would sound the same. One could also take out half the album and it would be a less painful listen. It doesn’t have enough material to be as long as it is. That’s not the sign of a great or incredible album. I think Lana should’ve calmed down on cranking out the ballads and tapped more into the part of her brain that composed Venice Bitch or The Greatest and made a 45 minute album of that sort of stuff and then I could see the P4k 9.4 or year-end lists.

Not sure I agree on the variety thing being limiting to one's enjoyment, what if someone is just really into that particular style?... more of it is then a positive and lends itself to a more cohesive body of work. So many artists go overboard in attempting to force eclecticism, usually to the detriment of a consistent atmosphere. Understated song-writing that's comfortably within an artist's wheelhouse will prevail, especially over throwing ill-fitting tangents at a wall and hoping they stick.
It's funny, because in certain genres this is seen as an overwhelmingly positive attribute, the ability to write a bunch of tracks in a similar style and for it to remain cohesive, often becoming something greater than the sum of its parts.
Regardless of this, you have pointed out where the album does change it up a little, so it's not as though the album is an immovable block 'wall' of standard piano ballads, even by your own admission.
Not really sure why I'm defending this, I don't absolutely love it either, just disagreeing with the general point.

it’s a slowcore album in spirit (particularly in the midsection) so the variety critique doesn’t quite land

I can see not liking this if you aren't in the right mood. Which is why if I'm craving riffs, this is like a 2.5. But if its night driving or smash time, its a hard 4.5.
