I can see what Ramon is on about now, it does still flow pretty well but you can hear those prog yearnings in a few of the transitions, like they’re forcing change when perhaps others wouldn’t. It isn’t messy by any means, but they sacrificed a little in the way of iron clad consistency to create something more ambitious.

I’d like to hear the perspective of someone with a greater understanding of composition within BM, to counter Ramon’s point - as no-one has said much apart from straight-forward disagreement so far.

Orchid and Morningrise, two of my favorite albums of all time, are riddled with left field transitions and they are heralded as classics. Pale Folklore is another example. It's not uncommon in black metal like this, and it's not necessarily a bad thing.

@Dungeon: yeah same, I’m an adamant early-Opeth defender here. I’m just trying to see another perspective. Call it curiosity I guess.

Ramon is doing a subtle horror thing. The thought of being unable to enjoy this album is actually quite scary.

Can someone explain the black metal/folk combination to me? Determined to get more into metal this year and I love folk, so it seems like a good entry point for me, but I’m kind of confused as to how the combo works.

well, if you haven't heard Agalloch they're a great starting point and basically got me into the genre. hard to explain, just something you'll have to hear for yourself ;)

In all honesty, this album bears very few folk vibes, especially in comparison to their previous work.
