new album isn't indie rock really so can't expect the drummer to standout

If you try learning National songs on drums, you discover that it’s more formulaic than you’d think by just listening. Especially with how often the stomping patterns using mainly the floor tom and snare drum there are, and lots of their songs basically have variations on that where the drumming is concerned.
The drumming is still fantastic and takes a lot of skill, don’t get me wrong; He’s one of my favorite drummers for sure and there’s still variety with the rhythms and plenty of creativity. The drumming has gotten a little more repetitive and low-key in the albums after HV tho. SLB shook things up a little.

Talons, it’s more about the way they use they used to use the drums in the songwriting; now they more and more just seem to be there because they’re supposed to be.
The issue I’m having here is there’s less memorable drum work, the Dessners are playing the guitars for atmosphere only most of the time, Matt only has like half the vocal duties...and at that point what are you left with? A lot of this feels more like someone else trying to write National songs and doing only a decent job of it.

“So Far So Fast” I can get behind, that one’s growing on me for sure. “Hey Rosey” is pretty middle of the pack for me. “Quiet Light” and “Oblivions” are beaut. “Where Is Her Head” I’m still deciding on. I just can’t help but feel like a lot of this is underdeveloped compared to Sleep Well Beast.

The Pull of You is far from one of my favorites but it might grow. I really like some aspects of it.
Boney that’s why the drumming has gotten less important; ever since they pursued this more atmospheric, experimental, less “rock” kind of style, percussion isn’t as needed as other elements like electronics and other stuff that’s come more to the forefront.

Not sure how anyone can rate a National album without repeated listens. They always reveal themselves slowly.
I didn't like them at all when I first listened to High Violet about 7 years ago, now one of my all time favourites.
This is already very good on first listen and I expect it will only get better.
