Wtf does this have to do with FJM? I must be missing something.

I’m glad Andromeda has revealed itself to others. Wasn’t blown away at first but over time it does feel like the most compositionally flawless.

First song is 100% 'Pure Comedy' sound palette with female vox for me - plus whole chord sequences, 2:45 to 3:05 just reminds me of something off that album. Some of the vocal notes she hits too. Close to a classic tune though, wish the second half of the album were closer to it in style.
This album has faded on me a bit. This style requires maybe a bit more personality than I'm feeling - she's less a John Grant...more a Rufus Wainwright for me right now. It's very good and polished, and 'consummately crafted'...I can't go much further than that.
The Glen Hansard has captured my interest a bit more.
This is better than the Jess Pratt though, so still the best female folk'y of the year so far (if we have to split guys and gals for such distinctions, I guess we do)

A lot of what makes this great is the seemingly lack of irony

@Sowing Titanic Rising has the same producer as FJM's last album, his song "God's Favorite Customer" has Natalie on guest vocals, and she toured with him. This has a lot to do with FJM, in fact. I can't make you guys hear similarities but they're there.

those are circumstantial links. she also guested on the last perfume genius album and toured with him, but no one would compare them as artists. at best her and FJM draw from a similar pool of influences, I don't think his music influenced hers.

they both like '70s singer-songwriters, that's all i got. inane comparison imo

If they’re operating in the exact same genre, sharing similar influences in terms of artists and eras, have collaborated/toured and (if I read it right) using the same producer it can only be inane so much.

I thought there were hints of irony and more conversational/deadpan moments in her lyrics/vocals too - maybe not
Her phrasing is so super similar to FJM in the verses of the opener I find it difficult not imagining Tillman singing them. Plus the production choices just reinforce it so much. The opening to Andromeda is ‘Pure Comedy’ - dunno, I’m not surprised to hear it’s the same producer put it that way.
Ok checked: apparently NOT the same producer lol.
Checked again: one of the same producers as 'God's Favourite Customer'. This makes sense.

the real difference is FJM is boring as fuck and this isn't

Hmmm, both a teeny bit boring but overall decent would be my take but ok
FJM has definitely released a better album than this in ‘Honeybear’ imo - though the first half of this is as good as that album

I can’t say I’ve at any point while listening to this thought to myself “this is super FJM” but I definitely see how they draw on very similar influences.
Another thing though - anybody else get Radiohead vibes in “Wild Time”? The string arrangement specifically sounds a lot like something from Amnesiac or A Moon Shaped Pool. Realistically it’s more likely that both are just drawing from similar classical influences there but every time I hear that song I can’t help but think of that.
I actually have to say I don’t feel like the back half is all that disappointing, yeah the first half has the hits but I like how it the album subdues as it goes on after climaxing with “Movies”.

It doesn't make sense for this record to curve back up in intensity after Movies. A diminishing ending fits this record perfectly, although it goes against the listener's expectations on first listen (which is why some initial comments are disappointed). First impressions are bound to be off with this one.

@theBoneyKing yes, Radiohead but I'm thinking "Karma Police." Compare the sound effect at at about 3:50 into Karma Police to the sound effect in the background of Wild Time at about 2:13. The songs have a similar feel.
