End of this film is so fucking stupid

so you didn't understand it, that's cool man you'll get there!

I know you're being facetious but
It's not really hard to understand
The OTT gore head explosions thing is just really bad, it's like way trashier and silly than anything in the original and it clashes really hard with the parts of the film that are actually good and noteworthy
The whole remake is stuck between wanting to be this artsy pretentious remake and wanting to be this goofy witch story and it does not balance it well.
The original was at least able to appear genuine the entire time while coming off as unintentionally goofy, which is far better because honest kitsch > false kitsch

I did enjoy the dance scenes and that one scene towards the end where the witches lure the doctor to the academy and then come out of nowhere screaming and dragging him off. That scene was really fantastic.
The whole movie would have been better if it simply wasn't a remake though, I mean they only use a single scene from the original film anyway, otherwise they're so fundamentally different that it being a remake is a disservice to what it does well

It's not a remake in the traditional sense; even if it follows the same general story beats and has a bunch of characters playing similar roles as in the original, it went way more ambitious, expanded on like everything about the premise of the original (especially the backstory of the witches and their daily lives) and adds so much original story, that it basically became its own thing.
They even made the visuals muted and bleak to illustrate how far from the original movie it really is. It's also not going to be that satisfying to watch if you're looking for a typical horror film like a slasher or demon possession movie or evil witch movie that you'd be used to seeing from Hollywood. Long stretches of it are more like a slow-burning historical drama meets supernatural occult/mystery story.

All those reasons are why it should have been a brand new film. It being a "remake" devalues it.

Yeah I wonder if it should've just been its own thing, all they needed to do was tweak a few elements of the script and it could've just been a standalone movie with nothing to do with the original Suspiria. Maybe it would've made more of an impression and been judged on its own merits, as opposed to all the diehard Argento fans complaining about how inferior and boring and bad this new one is compared to the original. They may have sabotaged the potential for more success by making it a remake of a beloved and very unique horror classic, always a risky move to do something like that. Imagine if they remade The Shining or Alien but changed everything about what was memorable about them and took a whole new direction.

Aside from character names and literally one single scene, the film is completely new. Really just didn't need to be a remake. I'd have respected it more if it weren't.

Which single scene? I sort of agree, tho they have the same general premise: American girl comes to a Berlin dance academy run by witches in 1977, then has to confront them at the end. Also Susie's friend sniffing around the school and gets found out by the witches happens in both movies. If this was the same script but a different title & wasn't advertising itself as being linked to Suspiria (1977) people would see the vague connection and call it a weird ripoff or something.

The scene where she finds where the witches go at night by counting theirs steps

And yeah I don't disagree there, like the dance academy bit is pretty much enough for anyone to call it a ripoff of it hadn't been a remake, but idk it just irks me still bc the original is one of my favourite films ever and I ultimately don't like how the remake works in contrast to the original, but I DO like a lot of aspects of the remake as its own thing

Get over it, nobody wants to see shot for shot remakes of 40 year old classics.
|

The fact that it's almost entirely it's own film with the same basic premise is nothing but a positive quality

"Get over it, nobody wants to see shot for shot remakes of 40 year old classics."
I 100% agree. My dislike of this being a remake is not based on wanting it to be exactly like the original. It's that a remake is pointless, a waste of time, and serves ONLY to bother those who love the original.
This movie should have been a new IP from the ground up and no remake should ever have been done.

As a massive fan of the original, I can say the remake is probably the better film. But it really depends on how much you want to dickride Giallo for hipster cred.
There, there's my 2 cents on a 2 month old argument.

Haven't seen the original but the remake is just kinda meh for me, 2.5-3/5 sort of deal. This soundtrack is definitely the best thing about the film.

"This movie should have been a new IP from the ground up"
yeah and then people would have called it a rip off of Suspiria so I don't really get how that makes sense to you
I'm sorry son but we stan Suspiria (2018) in this house

in any case the movie would have been so indebted to Suspiria as an inspiration that it would have made absolutely no sense to have pitched it as it's own IP
