Weird to alternate between this and Daughters all week.

Also I see a lot of similarities between this and Bjork’s Utopia. Lots of extended passages of psychedelic chirping in a dream meadow. Both run maybe longer than they need to. Both have big epic openers. Work better as a whole than a collection of songs. Similar aesthetic.

"But there’s so much to build to and around, having a few moments of discordance to elucidate themes of stimuli overload seems befitting."
exactly this

Sure, but if you don't buy into the album on a conceptual level than it's fair to dismiss that section as unpleasant (for clarity I don't like particularly enjoy that part but I far from hate it or think it's useless)

The lengths people will go to to validate something bad, jesus. That's more or less saying, "It's great that it's so bad because it helps highlight the better moments"

the lengths some will go to shit on a 3 min passage on a 90 min album just to justify their hate lol
dissonant isn't = bad. But maybe it is to you, and it would be a fitting argument to make if the thing was more than 1/34th of the actual album, but ok man.
seems like a petty thing to do, tbh, but it must be THAT annoying to you, i suppose.

Yikes

So, one of the album's themes is having to wade through shit to get to the good stuff?

Don't necessarily get what constantly complaining about a three-minute segment on an album is going to accomplish outside of looking obnoxious, but keep on keeping on, I guess.

Shhhh, let them be, this is fun to read.

On one hand, you make a marvelous point
but on the other, it's awfully redundant to read someone whine for a solid page about a passage that is but a mere drop of water in a massive lake of off-the-wall music.

On one hand, you're right. On the other, I still find it funny. Oh well, let's see what happens.

What Frip said. Some folk here are making a big deal out of not too much.

‘Off-The-wall music’
It’s experimental/off-the-wall for Julia Holter.
I’ve heard loads of stuff that sounds like segments of this album whether from Bjork/AVH/Kate Bush/Jenny Hval/etc - the biggest off-the-wall choice was making it interminably long and dry as an experience.

Look, that plane person gave their opinion on a particular song, which to me sounded a little like a nonsensical rationalization for something being bad. I'm not saying this album sucks because of that one 3-minute passage, I'm merely responding to what I thought was faulty reasoning, and now everyone's jumping down my throat as if that song is my central thesis for disliking this. It is a small part of a larger problem: that being, this is oftentimes aimless and grating. There's too much meandering and too much noise for my liking. I didn't mean to offend you, plane, just wanted to challenge your point, which I realize now seemed confrontational. Holter is a ridiculously talented artist who's capable of some very beautiful melodies, I'm just not getting a sense of that here.

Even a rarely stopped clock tells the wrong time when it, er, stops?
I'll let Boney off so long as this doesn't get close to his end of year top 10 :3
