I have to assume it's because the album was recorded at four different studios

You people should get your rating standards right. How is a 3 or 3.5 boring or forgettable? „Disappointing“ is alright if you are used to 4+ albums but 3+ Albums are still great and worth repeating spins. And no this is not subjective since the site itself has attributed respective words for each score.

Haha, I loved the Wonder Years album and enjoy Palms so that ^^^^ makes sense...

Overall it feels like Kensrue and Teranishi are no longer interested in writing demanding music any more.
The Bass is pretty great on some tracks and the drums are at least solid. I can literally see the Breckenridge Brothers facepalming (pun intended) on Kensrue introducing the first idea of "Hold up a Light" to them...

Album is weak sauce

Yeah the production sucks. Hate the drum sounds and none of it has any guts to it. It's neither polished-yet-gritty like TBE or super raw like Beggars and therefore sits in this really unsatisfying middle ground of "bleh."

It's worth digging more into your first paragraph. While I don't think Dustin has "lost his faith" per se, he's definitely taken a hard left turn over the last few years into a more liberal, milquetoast version of Christianity. I personally think that's part of what makes this album so dull. Thrice was great when Dustin was emphatic and convicted and had strong opinions, even if you didn't agree with them. Now he's wishy-washy, and the music reflects it.

This band is getting progressively more and more boring to me. I'm happy for them finding some commercial success, but this is just mediocre imo. The lyrics are pretty cliche and bland, and he repeats the song titles like 20 times in each song. Still love him as a vocalist but this isn't doing much for me. But then again, I loved Artist/Vheissu-era Thrice so the further they move from that the less I'm obviously going to dig their music.

Speaking only for myself, I have five Thrice albums 5'd and two of them 4.5'd. That's 70% of their discography right there given the two highest marks possible. Giving this album a 3 (barely) would absolutely qualify it as forgettable and disappointing because this is a half-assed cash grab in an otherwise near flawless discography.

Follow him on Twitter and you'll see some very strong opinions. He wanted to keep Palms more broad and less specific so that it would be a bit more timeless. A different approach than what he's sometimes done in the past where he wrote pretty plainly about 9/11, drone warefare, the Iraq war, global warming, etc...

3 listens in and still not feeling it :/ there's so many parts here that feel like half assed teases. Like Blood on Blood and Only Us COULD have been super experimental with the synths and harps but they dont go far enough with it. Then A Branch in the River COULD have been a heavier throwback to their earlier stuff but once again just doesnt go far enough with it. Frustrating
