it just comes off as trite because I feel like enough bands are already writing lyrics like this, but theirs are even more blunt. almost to the point of satire

Was just randomly jamming this. I love it, but like it’s almost too depressing for me. Can never do it twice in a row

I’m the opposite way! I can’t listen to this only once but I also don’t think the album is as depressing as some seem to. As Chan once mentioned, I think a lot of the lyrics of self-deprecation are largely tongue-in-cheek. It’s so exaggerated, not to be taken too seriously... but then at the same time it does feel weirdly relatable at times lol

Yeah I lied and have been listening to this non-stop since yesterday and had to bump it lol. I don't know if I would say tongue-in-cheek, but it's like funny depressing without being insensitive or immature. "Boy Considers His Haircut" is such a great tune.

True!

I just think there’s more overtly emo stuff that deserve that crown

I can get behind that. The Hotelier is the first one that comes to mind, but man there's a lot lol. It's hard to pigeon hole this album into one genre or the other in general, farily close to a 50/50 mix.

Brave Little Abacus probably has to take it for me since it's probably my favorite album of all time (at the moment), but Hotelier is very close behind. Marietta hasn't quite clicked with me the same way it has for a lot of others, but I like it more and more every time I revisit it.

It's a grower. I was kind of forced into listening to it lol. My mp3 player broke, the display wouldn't work, and I was stuck on TBLA. At that point I liked it, so I kept listening to it and grew into a love.

Y'all need to check the Stuck Out Here album from this year. Musically it's maybe not on par, but lyrically I might like it even more than this.
