yea its more to do with appreciating the edge that old school metalcore had i think

that said though, axe to fall is also really good

Agreed. Axe to fall is their last near-classic record for me. AWL is the watered-down version of that.

Yeah not really my kind of stuff, I like developed and mature styles of bands tbh, especially in metalcore

@Pika

Disagree but going this route I’d say AWL rules and Dusk In Us is the watered down version of it

i think most bands become more streamlined and the spark in their songwriting subsides somewhat in favour of accessibility, as they "mature" and "develop"

not just in metalcore but in a lot of genres

Axe and AWL both stand up well against all their previous material, in some cases I actually prefer them. Dusk is a different story.

Not in Converge’s case. Their creativity only expands as time goes on

while i agree with the statement, it doesn't relate to converge imo. songwriting was pretty poor in the 90s, songs never had much cohesion. still love those records, but i think their songwriting sparked/improved once ben koller got into the band and did superhuman things behind the kit. shit got much more creative.

i like the darker, muddier sound of the original mix. i enjoy this redux version and some tracks are indeed better but i find a lot of the time the really sick guitar tones and vocal effects are dampened a bit

Speaking of their older stuff... I really hope bands don’t completely stop recording live/without a click. Petitioning and Forever gain a lot of their charm from how jagged and imperfect everything is... and shit like that riff in Saddest Day that slowly increases in tempo is so badass and not something I ever want to go away.

AWL is top 3 or 4 Converge Imo. Would prob say YFM, AtF, AWL amd JD are their best. Dusk is a lot of fun too but less focused than the others
