Never listened to them before, are they just standard indie rock basically?
Also, The War on Drugs will be at least a 4, likely a 4.5, possibly a 5.

Every time someone has said MO in this thread I read it as modus operandi

Did I ask something before?
|

Album Rating: 4.7
it was re: why the band had such good reception here and seemed to not be well-loved on other sites

Well, this album has almost been universally acclaimed so far, or do you mean in general?

Yeah sorry, just found and read that. And I was genuinely curious, not really being sarcastic, I've always been rather fascinated by the phenomenon of Sputcore.
To respond, I wasn't really dismissing the band out of hand, I've never heard a second of their music so for all I know they really are as good as y'all say, I was just pointing out that they clearly have a pretty niche audience - as do most of the other acts you mentioned; Brand New, mewithoutYou, Julien Baker etc. At least, compared to a lot of other bands that are acclaimed here and elsewhere.
Then again, I inhabit a pretty small corner of the musical world so perhaps I'm just ignorenrt - but now I've been educated a bit.

you're right except for mewithoutYou, who at this point I think have been pretty reasonably acclaimed across most areas for people willing to look past the surface of "christian lyrics and screaming" that still follows them around. also, nothing wrong with having a niche audience really

I listen to a LOT of indie-rock artists, and I do think that Manchester Orchestra (on this album in particular) sound way more composed, emotional, genuine and definitely more interesting than many other bands within the genre.

Row I agree there's definitely nothing wiring with a niche audience. I just tend to be kind of skeptical of bands with niche audiences as it makes me wonder, if they're really that good, why doesn't everybody love them/why haven't they blown up? Clearly there is some disagreement on how good they are and, since I came to them from outside the niche, it's only natural to be kind of skeptical.

I also tend to assume every Sputcore band is pop punk or emo or post-hardcore, but it seems like that's not really accurate for this band, and that on paper they actually might appeal to me.

you forget Converge

^ I don't really lump Converge with Sputcore to the same extent as they actually are pretty universally acclaimed, if not quite to the same extent as here. They also exist in a genre that's more niche by definition.

Thrice, Yellowcard and Brand New are the only three true sputcore bands.
(curiosly all bands that sowing loves and parades around at every opportunity.... hmmmmmmmmmstiney)

Brand New is hardly a Sputcore-only band though, let's be real

I think sputcore I also think: Opeth, Silversun Pickups, Tallest Man on Earth, The Dearhunter, Dance Gavin Dance, Thank You Scientist.
Stuff I don't like basically. It's more certain qualities in music. A glossy production is a must.
These chaps qualify, they have that same something. They're ok though, not awful.
