I had never heard a Fleet Foxes song before I heard this, so I had no expectations of their classic sound or anything, and this just doesn't do it for me tbh

Their other 2 albums are definitely better than this, check em out if you haven't

Fair enough then, man, especially if the vocals aren't doing it for you. I do get what you're saying about it being a bit samey. And yeah, you might like their other two if you want a bit more variety, but perhaps not if you're not super into the core sound here.

it doesn't help that their hymnal coos always sound the damn same and are overused to death. it reminds me of that of monsters and men album where nearly every song recycled that 'hey!' from their lead track. after a while it just starts to sound gimmicky.
everything on here blends together seamlessly, which is actually a major detractor, for me. it's legitimately hard to tell when one song ends and another begins, which is one of the biggest criticisms towards folk music in general, and this album does little to nothing to disavow that.

yeah rowan check helplessness blues. it has some truly gorgeous stuff and doesn't run in circles like this one

Doesn't bother me, but the Monsters and Men analogy makes sense to me. That said, isn't it something they did in the other two albums as well? Or is it more prevalent here, haven't honestly noticed.

I wouldn't say it's any more or less prevalent, it's just that the songs here aren't as good
|
| |
probably more prevalent here because of the lack of interesting songs. you are right though, i just relistened to helplessness and they do it a lot on there as well. way more excusable though imo

The songs here are more interesting though. Trust me, I love Helplessness Blues (it's virtually a tie between these two albums, both 5's) - but if there's one thing this has over its predecessor it is elaborate song structuring and comparatively unexpected twists. HB is warmer, more proximate and personal. This is more progressive, daring - a risk.

If the whole album was as progressive and varied as Third of May I'd agree with you 100%, but it's really not

Ehhh I mean yeah I'll concede the whole thing isn't as progressive as 'Third of May', but it's still fairly inventive and pushing a new direction, as a whole. Enough so that it offsets what it loses in personal touch and warm/catchy melodies.

^ exactly this

What meat said, I mean

Idk sowing. Trying it again atm but my initial criticisms all stand. It's just so boring most of the time.

Nope too late, let the records show Gyro agrees wholeheartedly that he should double his score.

This has tons of variety and interesting, progressive musical ideas but a lot of them are subtle and reveal themselves with multiple listens. Plenty of users have voiced these moments in the thread already.
