I think most people will judge the lyrics more harshly if they're not enjoying the instrumentation already, cos if you're really enjoying the instrumentation, it gives you a shot of dopamine to the brain, and that shot of pleasure helps you overlook the negative aspects. I might just have spewed pure bs, but it's the best way I could theorise it

the way they promoted it made it out as if it was gonna be the equivalent of Brand New going from YFW to Deja Entendu. Even the album artwork promotes the idea this was going to be a more mature record. I actually thought it was going to be conceptual due to the promotion. It was just Ronnie Radke acting like he's seventeen still.
