His past couple of albums have been a guilty pleasure for me. This one is good too, but too long, agreed.
No need to call those ones guilty pleasures, really. They were both pretty well-received and conventionally great albums that didn't have the same issues of bloat and monotony (to an extent) that this one has.

But they still had the persona issues that have become glaring here, so it can be considered a guilty pleasure to like them. In some online circles you are straight-up laughed at for saying you're a father john misty fan

Well, certain online circles are stupid. The guy certainly has his share of haters but they're definitely the minority, even more so before this album. Hell, you wouldn't know it from what people have been saying in this thread but Honeybear placed number 3 in the users' poll here for 2015.

man terrible thread good job guys
|

as a side-thought; i find it interesting that most of the people who slam this guy for having an ego are the same people who moan about the fact that there aren't any 'rockstars' anymore

I don't mind his persona, and i really liked his first 2 albums, but this is just too monotonous for such a long duration, although it's not bad it tends to be boring.
|

pretty much my thoughts, wayyy too long

Yeah if he had cut it down to the same length as his other Father John Misty albums (45 min) it would be a much better listen; as it is I probably rate this the weakest of the 3, take the best 45 minutes though and I'd likely put it above Fear Fun.

I love you Doof
(That said I hope that 5 isn't genuine because this album is definitely flawed if still very good.)

Yeah it's not out of the question that it could grow to a 4 for me, I've only spun it through twice so far and I have a feeling the individual songs might distinguish themselves more with repeat listens. It seems to have gradually grown on some people who didn't like it first so given that I do like it already it's possible I will grow to love it.

I think this will grow on me a lot, really sounds like he never intended anyone other than maybe his dog and his wife to listen to this, and I like that.
"Josh you released the hokey rehearsal tape rather than the actual album you Movember muppet".

Damn I'm not even half way through, has there been some sort of time glitch in the Matrix

"sounds like he never intended anyone other than maybe his dog and his wife to listen to this"
really? there's a big sense of preaching to an audience on this one. he's critiquing society/people throughout
