As I referenced in the review, I think they do bring some of the hatred on themselves.

I don't think it's necessarily cool to hate on them but it's quite easy - just for me I've followed them since I first heard 'Darkness Surrounding', I'm heavily invested as them, and to me records like this justify why, even when it is flawed (which it assuredly is).

This is a band that have skirted around with styles, made mistakes, flirted with the mainstream a little too much from their earlier promise, and they have a few characteristics that simply make them unpalatable to a lot of people. Just for me, they keep showing enough to keep me interested.

Syn in particular is a fucking delight on this record.

And comments like that are why I easily could have gone over the 1100 words my review already was. Shame I always sucked at academic writing.

yeah.. that last song. Meh. Kind of pretentious. But the rest of the album is good so we'll ignore it.

Nice review. It allayed my concerns perfectly, that HTTK would mark a permanent shift towards uninspired and risk averse songwriting. Glad to hear they shook it off.

It does drag, biggest problem of the album. I don't mind the vocals too much tho for some reason and I can hear the bass quite well most of the time

None of the songs were truly memorable tbh, and it's way too long

Honestly will never understand the hate for these guys. S/t is the only album of theirs that I don't enjoy.

They do have a somewhat Nickelbackian ability to rub people up the wrong way.

Anyone else hear some major Bruce Dickinson influence in Matt's vocals on some songs???

You've seen what they look like right?
It's gotta be the vocals though that stop people from getting into them, surely?

Hating a band for their appearance is pretty childish tbh. Their behavior may understandably bias you, but ratings should accurately reflect how people perceive the music, not those that made it.

its kind of bewildering/hilarious that people exist who listen to this band in 2016
