I've never really dug Opeth, even their "good" stuff, so I'd probably hate this.

Speaking as someone who liked but didn't love the last three Opeth records (Watershed, Heritage & Pale Communion), I'm digging the hell out of this so far.

picked up the deluxe edition at the record store today, giving it a listen. here's hoping it wasn't a waste of $18.

"why would you buy an album without listening to it?"
I've enjoyed the singles and all of Opeth's previous stuff to an extent (with Pale Communion being the only disappointment so far), plus they're one of those bands where I almost feel obligated to get their new stuff just to keep my collection complete, so yeah. I don't think it's that unusual to pre-order a new album by a band you've liked for years without hearing the entire thing first.
