Nice Freddie
Gyro this is going to be a divisive album, you've got to acknowledge that, this is almost as much a departure from expectation as the Kid Cudi last year (I'm not saying it's as misguided or badly written as that of course)

A lot of these songs are built around repetitive guitar strumming, the whole tone is downbeat, the sound is minimal, there are no catchy sections to rival 'Channel Orange' - it's a massive departure, it really is

actually once he explained it, yeah, i agree with doof. i never really was too into frank ocean but i was hoping this was gonna be his best and it was his worst. really really inconsistent for me

its not even about catchy....its just the tracks arent engaging lol they squander the potential. frank just doesnt perform like i want him to on this one. some of the beats and atmosphere were remarkable but his performance was flat. not even just a catchy thing, he just didnt make an impact on me whatsoever as a listener here

was it meant to be melancholic and "grown up"? because it didn't manage that either.
I don't know what it was meant to be.
Please tell, what was it meant to be, man.

I'm not saying that, I'm saying this is a near 180 degree about-turn. I think Channel Orange still had subtlety, it wasn't just non stop easy disposable hooks.
This also still has hooks, they just aren't very good in comparison.

"3.9 average here is shocking considering the level of hype everywhere else - proud of sput today" Were you here when the avg for this was higher than Channel Orange?

it's subtle minimalistic rnb, man
i dont know if its purposefully meant to be grown up or whatever but sure it kind of feels that way
its certainly more cohesive than co imo

minimalistic ≠ unpolished
90% of the tracks on this needed it, the whole feels so disjointed it's just a shame really, because I can totally tell that if Frank had good instrumentals and production to pull all of his ideas to the front instead of leaving them half-baked he could come up with one of the best records of the decade.

Edit: apparently the vinyls are bootlegs. Have to ask my friend what she thinks the quality of it is cos then yeah that means it's an unofficial release
