The new album is gorgeous. Way more choral vocals than their other works and it's really bleak and morose in places but still predictably great

That new song is decent, judging from this though I have a feeling I couldn't rate anything by this band more than a 3.5-4 but I bet all of their albums are in that range.

How can you judge from this one album though out of many?

Because of the extent to which the style appeals to me. It's possible something would go to a higher level I just kind of doubt it. Doesn't help that from what I can tell all of their albums are really long.

I guess what I mean is that acts like this tend to make the same album over and over again and while I don't really have an issue with that, unless the style really appeals to you you really only need one or two albums from them.

Also considering that their album averages are all in the relatively small range of 3.8-4.2 I figure most of them would land in the same range for me as well.

Obviously it's not fair to judge a whole discog on one album but it's just that this doesn't leave me chomping at the bit for more.

i dont think the boneyking is far wrong really. most of their music is pretty samey and this is one of the better albums of theirs.

The music can get pretty samey and boring and saccharine tbh, but not often and I really like how diverse they got here and avoided those pitfalls. Most of their albums are excellent, or at least great. The new songs have been fantastic too.

They certainly haven't made the same album over and over again

In what ways are their others different from this/one another?

I remember Oblivion Hymns and some of their others being more homogenous and pure ambient. Those kinda put me to sleep but they're still solid, and some people love 'em.

oblivion hymns is neither homogenous nor pure ambient though

This one has a greater focus on vocal melodies and more straight forward dream pop vibes, Oblivion Hyms is their solely ambient album, DS and Chasing act as epic combos of all their styles, Raising Your Voice places more an emphasis on their post rock/shoe gaze side with quite a few ambient tracks thrown in too, and Kenotic is their most genuinely emotional album with more post rock songs than any of their albums. They're not Ulver but certainly didn't make the same album over and over again.

i think you guys are seriously mistaking oblivion hymns for maybe they will sing for us...

I guess that sounds like a fair amount of diversity (albeit among closely related genres), but yeah none of those calls out to me as much more appealing than this, except maybe Kenotic for the emotional element as this definitely lacks in that department. Interesting that this has more vocals than their others too since the songs on this with vocals are generally weaker

It's easy to mix up albums by this band, they're pretty samey at times and I'm glad they seemed to step outside the comfort zone a bit on this.

I love Hammock but yeah if I put all their songs on shuffle I'd have barely any idea what songs comes from what albums.

late to this but i believe boney has a good point

despite how much i love these guys, if youre not greatly a fan of this style, it would be difficult to find most of the work appealing aside from a few jams here and there

clean guitars played slowly, lots of delay and reverb, sometimes drums come in, sometimes ethereal vocals come in, chord progressions generally loop over and get louder in the chorus, lyrics are always about starlight. oblivion hymns has strings instead of guitars, maybe they will sing for us tomorrow loses the drums and a lot of the melodies and replaces them with textured loops, most of their other albums are pretty similar. this album is the best and has the most vocals. losing your voice and chasing shadows are great but i couldnt tell them apart.

I amend my original description of Oblivion Hymns actually. Maybe They Will Sing is their ambient album and Oblivion is probably their most classical influenced and strings driven album.
