This sort of undermines the whole "conciously crafted self-portrait of an artist approaching imminent death" thing... or does it? I'm disconcerted.
I guess, he could just start putting together whatever he had in the last few weeks or so just out of sheer need and hope to pull through for a few more months... but the theme of Blackstar nevertheless is too on the nose to subvert the notion that it's a "death" album

I don't think it subverts the theme of Blackstar. Bowie probably recorded Blackstar thinking he didn't have much time left and wasn't going to be able to make any more music afterwards, then his condition improved, so he started recording more music because it's what he does, and then it worsened and he died. Just makes the album somehow even more tragic for me, knowing that he was working until the end, and that apparently he wasn't ready to go.
This was already a 5/5 album for me before his death, but his death made it jump from "best since Scary Monsters" to "best since Low", because it uncovered even more layers of meaning behind the album.
Also, yeah, first Lemmy, then Bowie, now Rickman. Fuck cancer, goddammit.

It'll be a good year, or at least an interesting one. Maybe 2016 is the defining year of the decade, the one for the history books, like 1969 or 1991.

This is a very good and solid album by DB but the truth is that everybody is raving about it because he just died... This review is so far from being objective....
The album deserves a 4 at best

I was already raving about it before he died, so nope. Additionally, the Metacritic score for the album is 86 and at the moment nearly all of those reviews were published before Bowie's death. His death may have bumped this from a 4.5 to a 5 for some people (though as I said above, not for me) but it was already being canonised as a masterpiece even before his passing.

Wrong, I was raving about this before he died. Also, you're wasting your time trying to separate the album and his death because they're the same thing basically.

A good point; considering the album is about Bowie's death, the full meaning of the album didn't become apparent until the event it was about occurred.
