it sounds like all his other hits except Daft Punk is contributing and there's some noticeable differences because of that, but not enough to say it's unlike his other hits. it's a new and fresh weeknd single, that is the biggest difference between it and his other music I would say.

I would disagree. Most his songs off this record in particular are all very different stylistically imo. The Hills sounds like a more "mainstream" approach to something off Echoes of Silence or House of Balloons, I Cant Feel My Face is just a low-key electropop single, and Earned It is... some kind of weird orchestral track.
Starboy has a lot more tempo in the percussion, the vocoder chorus is very different for him, and the overall cadence and mood is just a lot more different than the 'darker' tones he tries to aim for. I think its a pretty nice change of pace for him because it really doesn't sound like he's trying to capture the 'essence' of his mixtapes while pushing for an MJ impersonation. False Alarm is going even further by trying to push a light-DnB style.

It should be obvious I can't argue with any of that haha. I'd have to listen some more and hear all of the LPs not just the singles. Haven't heard False Alarm. Will check that out.

i dont think abel had any actual charting singles until beauty behind the madness, so i was just naming off the ones from beauty behind the madness. i know that he made some tweet about how this album was meant to mark a 'new era' for the weeknd, so I think he's going out of his way to make the new album completely different from the rest of his discography.

I like False Alarm way more than Starboy, the latter sounds like any of his singles only partially refreshed by some nice Daft Punk production, but False Alarm has a great instrumental and I like the screamy hook (the verses are a bit dull, but that's bean the case with all of his songs since Kiss Land)

Yep, while the tempo of the rhythm builds up, sounds real nice together.

I even liked this album for the most part, despite a fair share of filler tracks, and I agree. Starboy is way better.
