the fact that the production is so unbearably raw makes the album rather mysterious for me as well

It seems like everyone has discussed it to death here. No one ever talks about how well written those songs are. The album has some of the best lead work in the genre.

what does it matter if it's well written when it's blanketed by a wall of noise? it'd be like making a delicious entree and then throwing in way too much salt. can't appreciate it for what it was or could have been or is behind all that salt, can only judge it as it's presented.

It all depends how much you can appreciate how a work is not only created, but presented.

people obviously seem to like it and that's cool with me tbh, just giving my take on it. i mean, i think it could have been a phenomenal album. bergtatt had that raw bm aesthetic and it worked wonders for that album.

I'd throw Bergtatt under the melodic black metal tag with folk elements. I wouldn't consider any of that album raw by industry standards.

as would i, not that doing so would take away from it's value at all, it's simply not raw

yah i mean the folksy stuff was presented with great clarity but the bm parts seemed pretty rough around the edges

It is a really clean album. The first (gasp) blackgaze album if we're starting one of those conversations.

Never really thought of that one as a blackgaze album but I'll listen again soon with that thought.

blackgaze is pretty far-fetched for it but bergtatt really is very accessible as far as black metal goes
