Heritage hinted at a promising future (and was a really good album in its own right), this saw them take a lot of that promise away.

I feel like Heritage tried so hard to be a 70's prog rock tribute and came off incredibly cheesy and too forced for me to enjoy all that much. This just seems like genuine Opeth trying prog rock but without their influences showing the maximum.

This shows their influences even more strongly than Heritage.
Heritage was obviously more musically adventurous than this. This is much more streamlined (to use a word that other people
seem to have been using to describe this album).

I think they're both about equally adventurous just in very different ways, this rides the line a little too much between being throwback prog and trying to recapture their old style, and it succeeded for the most part, but Heritage felt a little more honest with its overall direction.

I agree with the point about them.showing their influences more. There's a bit of Jethro Tull here, a bit of Goblin there.

They're both interesting and diverse albums, I just wish they weren't so dated. I agree the next album should be a little more experimental and hopefully more contemporary and less stale sounding

Compositionally Heritage was much more adventurous/interesting. This is more conventional in structure and even more derivative.

If Mikael decides to never growl again that's fine by me as long as the music he is making is still good.

I'm just hoping they build on the looser and more experimental elements of Heritage on the next album.

As much as I love their death metal albums.

Even if previous albums were hinting towards it, Heritage was a bold move.

It's so weird to think only a few years before it they released an album like WS

I think they should have done that as opposed to more of this which is what they have done now as of yet

Building upon some of the experiments within Watershed would have been perfect. Even if it were to be stuff like Hex and Porcelain Heart, it would still be much more interesting than this

I like the folky style of Moon Above, Sun Below.

It is, undeniably, a step forward from heritage, more cohesive and consistent. Personally I think Pale Communion is the best Opeth release since Ghost Reveries.

lol, those songs are more boring than most of this album.

Porcelain, maybe, but Hex is hardly boring
