"the birth and death of the pillars of creation is really disheartening because none of the potential that track had in its foundations were built upon at all"

These are my thoughts exactly. The first couple minutes show so much promise, not just for the song, but the entire album. It has cosmic weight, and hints of the ancient mystical beginnings of creation. It's not space and it's not nature. It's the spiritual beginning. But, it's still Agalloch. Then, it just turns to pure shit and stays there for the rest of the album.

Dark Matter Gods is alright, though.

so I'm taking this time to get blitzed instead of watching them live right now

why not get blitzed while watching them?

Yeah I don't get why serpens cauda is even a thing on this record. The build-up on Plateau was cool and a good way to end the record. Tacking a clean guitar piece on afterward is really awkward.

I assumed they were gonna play lots from this, so I made friends instead

Setlist from Portland this month (16May2014)

The Astral Dialogue

Vales Beyond Dimension

Limbs

Dark Matter Gods

The Melancholy Spirit

Ghosts of the Midwinter Fires

Celestial Effigy

...and the Great Cold Death of the Earth

Plateau of the Ages

to me it looks a little serpent heavy to me, which I don't blame them since they just released the album. But it's good to know what you're getting yourself into.

as a huge fan of the band, and someone who dislikes this album, i'd still give the songs from this the benefit of the doubt in a live setting. i wasn't the biggest faustian echoes fan but i thought it ruled live

This isn't on the Trending chart anymore and that makes me sad. Also less than 20 pages come on Sputnik--Opeth got like >10 pages in a day on an old album. dsjkldjafkld;djlk

Easily the weakest Agalloch and average by their standards, but still an enjoyable album. That's how I'm looking at it.
