Not necessarily, when put into context of a sonical continuum we see that Vaporwave and its inductees are moving towards a new, undefined direction.
But is it even happening?

I think they were arguing the point that wikipedia is reliable for its information most of the time, which isnt exactly the same thing needed for writing a college paper.

whoever was arguing that wiki is a reliable source is in for one hell of a ride in university
i have a bachelor's of science in nuclear engineering (no joke (also, yeah look at me)) and of course wikipedia is not a source that you would use in writing a paper, but you do realize that wikipedia articles themselves have sources, right? you can check the article, then check the sources. its a great place.

when does something constitute an official genre? like are there enough signatures on a petition to make vaporwave a genre for obama to recognize it?

That is a tricky question but it is fair to be skeptical until the Wikipedia link references more than
just a couple of internet rock journos and no peer reviewed academic sources.

I doubt their will ever be a "new" genre just new sub genres. And vaporwave in itself probably wont ever reach the height of new genre just bc its literally a "wave", and it will die out to the next wave/fad.

i'm not arguing any of these things. i'm arguing that if you blindly trust wikipedia then ur in for a surprise. clearly you dont blindly trust wiki and check the sources etc for reliability. i agree wiki can be great as long as you're careful and realize that it is very flawed.

Look we all know vaporwave isn't a genre, it's a hashtag

"and it will die out to the next wave/fad."
It's easy to see it like that, but Vaporwave holds up far more than all these recent micro-genres like
Chillwave and Witch House, because alot of these artists are operating on a level that's less about
definition under a simplistic style change like Chillwave or Witch House, and more about a larger
message to modern society that will continue to be relevant as long as technology continues to define
us. Whether the name remains a legitimate genre or a sleezy hashtag is irrelevant; it has
inadvertently spawned artists that simultaneously celebrate many approaches to music - the cerebral,
the abnormal, the nostalgic, and the straight up funky and danceable - and which is (to me) what makes
artsts like this so interesting.

keep in mind that ramona declared a while ago that she was done with vaporwave and subsequently removed all images of faces from her releases
vaporwave is something that goes deeper conceptually than those fad prerogative microgenres, in such a way that i think it will probably be seen as something like the paris dada movement or the surrealists at the beginning of the century
|
| |
Or it will die out and be replaced with the next tumblr-inspired masterpiece that will promise to operate on multiple levels
|
| |
i sincerely doubt vapour wave will have the tiniest fraction of the impact of surrealism and dada

hopefully that does not happen because I actually enjoy this stuff

at least it was good for a lol tho

keep in mind thats probably exactly what people thought when L'Age d'Or first premiered way back in the day. the influence of art is usually only quantifiable in retrospect

Implying every garbage internet music fad will be canonical. Nobody answered my question earlier about a definition. Please don't regurgitate Wikipedia. It states that vaporwave is both anti-capitalism and anarcho-capitalism, which is a contradiction.

maybe thats the point

i dunno dude i still think that was an absolutely preposterous statement but in the distant future if u are right i will concede to your premonitions from my grave
