I'm gonna be reaaaallly generous and give this a 3.5 and hope it grows some more. A 3 is probably more appropriate and a 2.5 would make an equal amount of sense.

this is spectacularly average

Sounds about right.

I can't think of any reason to listen to this instead of, like, Whirr or Ride other than French is kinda cool sometimes.
|
| |
Easy there
|
| |
New Whirr is probably the best thing they've done so far.

It was OK, if I remember correctly. Their other stuff was better.
|
| |
Their other stuff is still some of the best shoegaze in many years but it remained rather typical (as is the usual criticism of that band and so many others).
With Around they got out of that and found something that sets them apart stylistically.
|
| |
My favorite is still Pipe Dreams, but Around might just be second best

Woohoo it's on Rdio. (Don't know why/how, it does say the release is Jan 20th).
Time to listen.

Well I enjoyed it. Need more listens. Wasn't too keen on the bonus track (Into the Waves) though.

For anyone interested. Not what I was expecting AT ALL.

"Best experienced with cardigan"

eeesh that bonus track wasn't good. almost as if alcest were like "right, if we're gonna be making shoegaze, we have to have a female singer".
