The production really isn't an issue with me. It isn't fantastic, but not as horrid as everyone makes it out to be (then again, I'm not nit-picky with that, there's no sole way I want all music to be mixed). Lyrics are great, and definitely a step up for Petrucci, and not a weak song on here. Some I like more than others, but I think they have something going on here.

none of the songs stood out for me, even illumination theory was such a lame song

First listen, I wasn't blown away. About 4 listens in and it just kinda clicked. I'm constantly having parts off this album play in my head. Illumination Theory is one of the better epics for me. It isn't all too cohesive, but if there's any song that really got me on some level on the first listen, it was this one.

"possibly their best effort since Train of Thought" and tot is one of their weakest albums of 2000s

@Artuma Opinions, opinions. I actually like ToT (shocking I know). I forget how much I like it sometimes.
@Omair That's how I feel with ToT. Since Scenes, 6D's is still their best album though.
It'd probably go like this for me (post-Scenes):
1. Six Degrees
2. Train of Thought
3. DT12
4. ADTOE
5. Systematic Chaos
6. Black Clouds
7. Octavarium

As I Am is probably right at the bottom of ToT. Not a bad song, but not one I usually go to.
Don't get me wrong, I like Octavarium a lot (the song itself being one of my favorite DT songs of all time), but a lot of the other tracks on there are somewhat forgettable for me. Again, not bad, just as a whole album, not my personal favorite.

ToT got me into DT, perhaps thats why I can still enjoy it, but I would understand why someone wouldn't like that album

I thought your review was well written, and quite honest despite this -
Even in crafting his own rhythms, Mangini adds very little to the band that's new or extraordinarily thought provoking and overall, that's how this album can be characterized.
...is not good.
I find this often when reading reviews on this site. Reviewers hold a band to a standard that, from the writers perspective, comes across as agreed upon by the musician and the reviewer, and thus is held to some standard that is, frankly, non-existent. That is just a silly way to review music. Well written though.
