I think Lateralus is more of the enlightenment itself whereas Aenima is the process of reaching it by letting it all go... thats why its so much darker and gritty because it mirrors the destructive and painful journey
the name Aenima is even a reference to literally flushing out shit lmao

Well on Lateralus Maynard was clearly a very changed man with a positive outlook. His ability to write extremely positive songs like 10,000 Days and Reflection didn't come about until later. I mean most of the stuff on here points to hatred in himself and other people, guilt and child abuse. Among other things too. From my point of view, lots of the lyrics point to him not being able to let go just yet.

couldn't agree with you more, most of this album is filled with reasons for why he can't let go. child abuse/trauma (Jimmy + pushit), anger towards people (eulogy+hooker), addiction (stinkfist)
I think 46 and 2 marks a time when one starts to strive for change and self evolution but its just out of reach, "46 and 2 are just ahead of me" ...but then the self is grounded right back to hatred with arguably the most hatred inspired song in their discog: hooker. once the t/t comes on it seems to reflect the realization of whats holding him back (the ego and the superficial aspects of life) and is followed by Third Eye, which is the most positive song on the album and lyrically bridges Aenima and Lateralus

But if you had to choose: Do you like this album or Lateralus better?

I've said this before but I refuse to believe he wasn't abused as a child. He's written about it so many times in the past. Unless he has a weird obsession of the psychology of why people do that like Steve Wilson haha

I like Aenima a tiny ass bit more than Lateralus
and I don't think some of these songs are written in his point of view (kinda like some of the songs on 10,000 days), in interviews with APC about 13th step, maynard says the 13th step is about addiction and thats something that he's admitted to never going through... and stinfist seems to talk about addiction and over indulgence. I think its more like Steve Wilson like you're saying, just something hes interested in

Yea it totally could be, but I've said before he could be lying to us who knows? He's not obligated to tell the people everything.

Spaceman has nailed everything I'd have said. haha The subject matter and passion of the t/t is off the scale.
