Agreed, if they sounded like Tool they'd be good

"except that Tool sucks"
I dont understand how someone who's as big a fan of bands like Karnivool and Fair to Midland as you are can even say this
I mean I dont actually jam Tool all that often, probably less than I do, say, Fair to Mildand (except maybe Aenima), but to deny their musical ability in the face of bands like this especially that wouldn't exist without them is just ridiculous

except that Tool sucks
But Karnivool is much better? Like Kill said, this band is a tool cover band essentially. I like Karnivool but they have and never will have anything on Tool.

Don't understand the comments sayin Sound Awake was immediate. Come on, really? Songs like Set Fire to the Hive, The Caudal Lure, Deadman and Change took time to grow on me.
So just because they had to grow on you means it works that way for everybody? Think for a second before saying things like this.

I don't see the Tool comparisons. Other than a few songs from Sound Awake they hardly sound the same. Of course, any
band that has a single Tool-like song will inevitably be compared to them since Tool is so overblown.

I think calling them a 'Tool cover band' is a little over the top, but Karnivool do borrow a lot from Tool, they're just a lot mellower/poppier
But Sound Awake especially was structurally and to some extent stylistically very tool like

i think the point to me made is that sound awake is no more immediate than this is. the complexities within music like this will always present a certain amount of footwork before understanding the full extent of what the band is going for.
whether or not you're willing to do that footwork is another thing entirely. but it's a fair bet that the "boredom" that most experience with this is a lack of willingness.

and you can trace back every single modern prog band to tool. it's unfortunate but that's what happens when you define an era for a genre.

I think there are many more bands that influenced the scene. Tool isn't the only one.

of course tool isn't the only one. nothing is ever black and white. but to claim that anyone is more influential on the current scene than they are is crazy.
