So andcas, you assume you can judge music (or something else) objectively, without any influence from your education, the package and the history around you and the produce you're judging? (If you say yes, I would like you to give me the objective definition of "shit")

I think this is the main point in this conversation (and one of the most interesting abstract reflection in general): the definition of "beauty" and "truth", at least on a purely aesthetic dimension. I think "beauty" (like "truthfulness" and "goodness") it's a purely subjective/cultural unit, a semantic element we develop taking elements from our surroundings.

I don't think we should stop judging things critically: I only tried to say that we should drop all of our pretensions of universality (objectivity). By the way, I'm not saying that the album in question has real artistic merit: I just say that if we don't know the artist and everything involved in her rise to fame, the cover was radically different and its release welcomed by Pitchfork Media in terms of its experimental quality our opinions would be slightly different (In my case, equally negative, I think, because I would see it as a scam (because I can't drop my pretension of judging things with pretension of objectivity in my common life, so I basically agree with you).

Anyway, I would like to make clear that I love timewasting.

you can spin it anyway you so choose but then again what's to stop anyone else from taking something you find to be

absolutely appalling and draping it with hyperbolic claims of "you just don't see the genius." what I'm getting from

this entire conversation is there's no such thing as failure if someone can find enjoyment in it

oh, not at all, there are certainly such things as failures even if people find enjoyment of it. I have plenty of negative opinions on albums that are informed by what I think the record's doing, why i think its insidious or terrible etc.

also, aside from that hyperbole that closes the first paragraph, i don't wish to make the case that this is a work of hidden genius, not like the guardian or tmt who i think went a little nuts with this. i do think that this is an interesting critical situation because the natural reaction is to shrug this off and laugh at it (i.e. that video a few pages back someone posted with a guy just mocking her to her face), when, like I say in the review and MarvinLapsus said just now, if this had any modicum of artistic merit, we'd be having a different sort of conversation about it.

my point i guess is, just because we're not "supposed" to take it seriously doesn't preclude it from being taken seriously

Everyone else's opinion might as well be considered completely invalid cuz we have a master critic in the house . He can experience entire albums by listening to one song!

By golly he ain't even a critic, he's the Second Coming! Only Jesus Christ could do such a magical and impossible thing thank you Jesus for your opinion

"not sure if greatest album on earth or worst thing ever made"

why does everyone think it's one of these two? it's neither.

*IN MY OPINION* this is a below average experimental pop album that had a decent concept (sonically - I'm not saying this is a "concept" album, my word), but failed in execution.
