"The song seems to be written about someone who has recovered from an addiction or illness, but then becomes overly righteous. I like dedicating it to my ex-anorexic girlfriend who recently left me"
Whiny self-pity in reviews never did much for me.
Anyway I can't believe I held off on checking out Maynard's stuff this long, this album has been my first time hearing anything of his and I freakin' love it. Guess I better get hunting for the rest!

"It's a fantastic album, but in no way is it better than Mer de Noms."
I disagree. Both are great in their own right. But this album was so accessible for me.

"13th stepping" is actually an in-joke within the recovery and support group culture. It means trying to have sex with another addict from your recovery group (even pursuing a romantic relationship). It's so named because you're skipping over steps and looking for something to fill a void with someone as sick and in need as yourself. The two people are often feeding off each others' desperation. There are only 12 steps, once you've completed them, you're done (though no one ever "completes" a recovery program). It fits in with all the talking of sex in this album. This isn't to say the review is bad, quite the opposite actually, I enjoyed it. I love this album. One of the only stay overs from my younger days. Maynard's voice is gorgeous on this record.

yeah I like this more than Mer de Noms, I think the songs clicked more although there probably aren't as many standouts

Both are great for different reasons, but yeah, this is way more solid as a "record listening experience" from start to finish.

Um
Did I miss this bit or something?

There are tons of metaphors to sex in the lyrics. A lot of them run concurrent to the addiction themes as well, it's the usual sort of writing Maynard does with both Tool and APC.

Good album. Listen to the original The Nurse who Loved Me by Failure. It's on what is, in my opinion, one of the greatest albums of all time. Much better version than the APC one. Rest of this album is pretty solid though

I think the heavier and more pissed off parts of this album are simply more interesting than the rest, but most of it's heavier and pissed of so.... cool?

originality is definitely important but the accessibility portion of music is most important to me. apc has verse/chorus set up and shorter songs than tool and i like it better. probably because i grew up listening to radio rock stations
