^so, so, so wrong
this = illusion > everything else because 90% of it is a snoozefest

this is soooooo scene though....
the songwriting on illusion is so much stronger and less verse/chorus dominated, plus the riffs are better, and the admittedly weak production really gives them a rawer sound. whereas here they're just so polished and plastic most of the time. paper tigers manages to capture some of that spark from illusion, but this is a pretty weak followup

Everything else > this & illusion because they're relatively uninteresting

to be fair i do have a raging fanboyboner for illusion, but seriously back up major minor being more interesting than illusion please or i will write your name on the stickynote i keep by my computer titled "users whose opinions you should ignore"

you think this is polished and not vheissu?.. vheissu is about as sterile-sounding as thrice gets

Album Rating: 3.5
vheissu is definitely sterile but the overall style is different enough from this and illusion that the sterility makes it sound better imo.

Damn it, you picked the hardest one out of their later albums to argue for lmao
Illusion strikes me as a group of 20-somethings desperate to take their energy out on something. Yeah, it's raw and has plenty of energy, but amidst all core-ish riffs and semi-breakdowns there's nothing that strikes me as "great". I don't hear much in the way of nuance or sophistication besides some nice leads and odd time signatures.
M/M has a great sense of groove, melody, and atmosphere that I feel lacks from their pre-Vheissu work. Dustin's voice improved exponentially, along with the band sound more like a unit rather than technically showy. More refined, more mature, more attention to detail, and the emotion from the songs feels more tangible to me.

idk, major/minor is so nirvana worshippy/just flat out BORING. like, maturity is cool and all, but they didn't have to sacrifice interesting songwriting for it. one thing that rules about illusion is the song structures are all really varied and interesting; you've got tracks like kill me quickly that are almost progressive in nature, with no revisiting previous sections, and then tracks like in years to come where there's a definite verse and chorus but an absolutely jaw-dropping coda (if the emotion in "i wanna write the perfect song/ and play it just for you while you are tangled up in sleep/ i need you more than i'll ever know/ until i stop breathing my lungs will take you for granted" isn't tangible to you idk what is)
on the point of dustin's voice improving; sure, he improved, but he just straight up blends into the crowd now. his voice was more unique early on, and while he may have more technical prowess he doesn't sound special anymore.
as a disclaimer i am a huge fanboy for illusion, i've listened to it >250 times, it's my favorite of all time ever, etc etc

yeah major/minor is about as boring as an album can get tbh. only heard it 4 times, but i really struggled to get through it

illusion will always be awesome, and one of their more unique albums overall

I definitely see your point on the song structures, and somewhat agree. Also, I gotcha about loving the album, it can kinda suck when somebody disses something that holds a lot of personal value, I just don't enjoy it that much in comparison to their newer stuff.

first 3 thrice albums are best, it's a known fact (not counting that one no one cares about). also funny considering the band name.
