Yea based on the dvd I think he's totally done with growls.

I really like the influences I hear in there (like the opening of The Devil's Orchard) but they just are too over the top progy and over produced for my liking. I can see why people like them now but it's just not for me.

Yea it's funny one day I listen all the way through and love it and another I find myself only wanting to listen to 4 songs. I think it's cause I went overboard listening to it lately so I'll give it a rest and come back fresh in a couple days.

Seeing this live, with Mikael's humor, and the accompanying stage artwork, really made it for me. The whole album seems like a concept of a city burning down and the population being led out back into the wilderness by devils, for worse or for better. Haha, ya know, just like the album art!

Hmm interesting take but I'm pretty sure it's not a concept album. Their website explains the artwork, but it's good to hear that seeing this stuff live made it better. They're not coming to MTL or TO on their tour damnit!

I listened to the Devil's Orchard yesterday and it was really good. Need to hear the rest of this.

I'm loving this more and more with each listen, might have to bump my rating up to a 4.5.

Saw Opeth live in NY tonight. There were douches that kept shouting, "Play some fucking metallll!"
This was so fucking annoying. People were also chattering a lot during the quieter, acoustic songs, which was even worse, really.
I'm glad Mikael took it all in good humor, though, and, yeah, Heritage sounds (even) better live.

Not as good as Damnation, but after listening it a couple of times I've come to appreciate it a lot more than on the first listen. It's a nice, soothing melancholic ride. That Opeth sound is unmistakably there. And yeah, douchebags who go around wanting more metal from this band don't know the first thing about it. I thought that of all people, Opeth's fanbase should be open-minded.

so, this just topped Still Life in my book.

THIS.
I slightly-misquote Mikael from last night: "This is a song you'd need an acquired taste for... like all our songs..."
People who just heard Blackwater Park, great as it is, and just loved how *HEAVY* it was without considering the other aspects of Opeth's sound were probably the douchebags in attendance last night. If they wanted a brutal death metal show, there are plenty of other options in NYC, of all places.

Metalopeth, do you live in Montréal?

I'm glad to read all the thoughtful comments on here.
Let me first say, I am the biggest Opeth fan there is. I know, you thought it was you, but it was actually me all along.
I've listened to the first 5 songs on my 5.1 set-up at home.
I know it's early, but let me say right now: this is the album I've been wanting Opeth to make for years.
I'm trying to keep this in perspective, as this will take time to sink in - but already, this might be my favorite Opeth album of all time.
This makes me fucking excited beyond belief where this band goes next.
This makes me proud as hell to be an Opeth fan.

You have some good points, but this review is too short to really explain your feelings towards this album.

All of you are in a hurry here...This one demands a lot of listens to grow, to get all the subtleties...There are many interesting things to it besides Rainbow, Camel and even Opeth influences.
