Still second best Ntl IMO. At least half the album is 5/5 songs.

Good call. It's definitely at least top 5.

available is a top notch for sure. it's a shame that they don't make song like this anymore, i personally prefer the heavy guitar and vocal as in 'available' than 'gentleman rock' that predominates in their sound along the discography.

they definitely got better after this, but i do miss the energy that they used to bring to some songs.

"Lucky You"
"Available" is top 20 though

Once upon a time "Available" was a top 10 Natty for me, but I can't say I've heard it in at least 3-4 years so I'd be lying if I said it was still anywhere near that high.

“Cardinal Song” is right up there too. In fact this may have the best pair of bookends on any National album.
Fall asleep with strangers’ wives
The wild wives of unknown men
Good for you, you’ve just become
Just another one of them...

Berninger is definitely one of the all time great lyric writers, right up there with Isaac Brock and Thom Yorke.

Available is a decent track (not quite top tier here) but the lyrical voice's immature self-pitying bollocks grates on me to no end

Only listened to Cardinal Song and Available so far, but they are fantastic. Did I just happen to pick two of the best songs off of this, or is the rest on that level (hopefully)?
If the other songs are anything like those two, the score for this is baffling.
Gonna check the rest when I get home later.

Think those two are definitely well-loved, but they're not in my top 3 from this

After checking the other comments on this page, Available at least seems to be like, the best song here lol. It is fucking amazing, agreed.

Rachel and Water Wall are underrated treasures here, but Lucky You is a top 10 National contender

The lyrics on “Lucky You” just kill me
You clean yourself to meet
A man who isn't me
You're putting on a shirt
A shirt I'll never see
