Well for instance; the guitar on Skinny Love suffered from the production; coming across as a little
warped and on the opening track; Flume. There are other small spots around the album, effects that
have been perfected on this such as moments on BlindSided.

The production is pretty much spot on on both albums seen as they're two very different things

That's fair. Probably just looking for different things. =)
I liked the production on this, I thought they're production skills have improved greatly.

Do you know the story behind For Emma and how it was recorded?

Nope, all I know is I like it. =)
Would you mind telling the tale?

Justin pretty much secluded himself in a cabin for three or four months in Wisconsin, allegedly

fighting some sort of illness. He got his brother to bring him a drumset but recorded the whole of For

Emma playing every instrument himself...on some busted up recording equipment and shitty mics. It was

meant as a demo, but his record label loved the raw sound, and decided to release it in that form. So

you can't really speak in production-terms when it comes to For Emma.

I know but then; it was still his choice. =/
He didn't have to release it, I mean it turned out well for him, I just didn't like it.

Villagers' Conner O'Brien did all of the instrumentals in their debut record and Iron & Wine also
recorded all the instrumentals for his debut record himself, produced it too.

My personal problem with it is that I prefer a little more production to be done in Bon Iver's music.
That raw sound works better for less ambitious records, in my opinion.

I strongly disagree. There is a profoundness in the raw recordings that is somewhat lost in the polishing and production of records...I mean, on For Emma, you're right fucking there. It's real.

Really? I don't find it that sense of raw, it just sounds sort of cheap recorded at time, not that I'm
actually listening to him play right there, especially considering all the layers of his own vocals
and clear auto-tune on his voice, definitely doesn't sound like he's singing right in front of me.
=/

Again, only my opinion...I still gave it a 5 but the production was always my biggest gripe.

Pink Moon has some of the most intimate production definitely.

Given the choice, would you have them re-record For Emma in a professional studio and produce it just like the new record? Wouldn't it kinda loose it's soul?

Oh God, I wouldn't now. Leave it the way it is!
But if back then it was touched up a little; I'd probably like it way more then I already do. =)

If For Edward was professionally recorded, it wouldn't be that good.

I'd say For Emma was closer to a 9.5 than this, personally. Still, glad that P4K are finally giving him the credit he deserved 4 years ago.

Yeah, switch the scores around and then we have something. Pitchfork's late to this party...a 9.5 kinda seems like they're overcompensating.

for emma is so much better. the 9.5 is like an overcompensation for not raving about the first album when it came out
